News – GB Paracycling Team
The first round in Maniago, Italy saw some promising results for an inexperienced squad with Stephen Bate and Adam Duggleby winning bronze and silver in the time-trial and road race respectively, and they will be hoping to build on that good form with selection for the Road World Championships just around the corner.
Paralympic silver medallist, Karen Darke, will be hoping to recapture her form in the time-trial and build on her third place in last weekend’s road race, while 2014 tandem road race world champions Corrinne Hall and Lora Turnham will have a point to prove after a couple of disappointing performances in Maniago, left them off the podium in both of their races. The squad finished the weekend with a haul of two silver medals and five bronze.
The team will again be looking to pick up important qualifying points for the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games. Great Britain para-cycling road coach, Paul Dring, said: “Last week was a great opportunity to see where we’re at against, basically the best in the world.â€
“Some of our guys really stepped up and performed and some of them know there is a little bit more work required but it has given them an opportunity to see what they need to do. The men’s tandem performance was great to see. We knew they were capable of that and they really stepped up and produced a couple of fantastic results. To ride the way they did was a positive boost and it has given a real buzz to the whole team”.
“We’ve now got the opportunity to build on those performances in Switzerland. Some people put in solid performances but know they can do better and they’ve got this platform now to go on next week and I expect them to ride and perform better next week.
“We’re fortunate to have these back-to-back races. We’ve had a week to recover and analyse what we need to do this week to get better performances.â€
