Another Q&A from the Spokes Racing Team, this time with first year junior Joe Reilly who only started racing in 2015

Feature – Joe Reilly Q & A
1. When will you start your road season and what will be the first race?
Joe: My season will start with the Velo29 Series at the Croft circuit. I hear it’s good racing and will be vital for me to hopefully gain points which is essential for gaining my cat 2 licence.
2. What races will be your targets for 2016 and why?
Joe: My main target will be getting my second category licence as early as I can get it. I will also be wanting to build on the limited experience from last year. I will do this by racing some National Series as well as racing in Europe throughout the season.
3. How will you spend the time on the bike between now and your first race in training?
Joe: Over the Christmas period, I spent a lot of time in the saddle just doing back to back 100km+ rides just to build a base especially as I don’t have one as I only took up racing last year and Junior races aren’t quite the 40 minute crits the Youth ones are. Now I will focus on more efforts during weekdays but still maintaining the volume of miles on weekends.
4. What was your favourite Xmas present?
Joe: I had a lot of good presents, but probably Gearing Thomas’s new book solely due to its entertaining but informative factors.
5. When it rains, which its doing a lot right now, is it turbo time or wrap up and get wet?
Joe: Defiantly go outside. The best rides are always ones in the tipping rain! Once you embrace the fact you’re going to get soaked, you’ll start enjoying it!
6. If you could do any race in the world including World Tour etc, what would it be and why?
Joe: It seems to be everyone’s dream to race the Tour De France, so probably that. But the Giro would run a close second as it’s a lot more exciting and the romance the Italians have for cycling is contagious.
7. Who’s your favourite rider in the pro peloton (either UK or WorldTour/ProConti)
Joe: Fraser Martin (Raleigh GAC) inspirer of millions and all round nice guy.
8. What is your favourite music track when warming up for a race or on the turbo?
Joe: Depends on my mood, can be anything from Beethoven to calm the nerves, or JME and Skepta to really pump me up.
9. If given the option, normal brakes or discs?
Joe: I do like the advantage of discs on a road bike. But the physiological effect of looking at your carbon race wheels and seeing a huge chunk of metal attached to them – which just looks wrong – would probably outweigh the actual advantages they can give you (joking obviously!)
10. What’s the spec of your race bike for 2016 and your favourite bits on it?
Joe: This year we are racing the Kuota Kyron. They arrive next week and I am really excited to try an aero bike out and see if I can feel the difference. I am looking forward to using my Zipp 404s.
