Madison Genesis secured second place at a chaotic opening round of the 2016 Pearl Izumi Tour Series on the Isle of Man.

The hour-long criterium around Ramsey harbour better resembled a series of team time trials, as groups of five – containing representation from each major squad – fired off the front.

An ever-attentive bunch was reluctant to let a group go in the first 20-minutes of racing, but when it did, Felix English was part of the action.

This first selection of six riders was allowed a 40-second gap before another five – including Alex Blain – would break free from the peloton and bridge across.

But a group of 11 was too tough to handle and with disarray in the leading pack and further moves from the chasing bunch there had to be a change in race dynamic

Alex Blain was in the move that, 20-minutes from the finish, defined the race as five went clear.

What remained were a series of small groups spread across the road – the second with Gruff Lewis and Felix English, the third with Matt Cronshaw and the fourth Tom Stewart.

Such chaos led to a prolonged and anxious wait to confirm the final result which, showed the team to have secured second in the crit.

In combination with second place in the day’s earlier team time trial, this left the squad second in the all-important overall team classification, just two points behind early leaders JLT-Condor.

Round two of the Pearl Izumi Tour Series takes place on Tuesday May 17 in Motherwell in what should be a very different contest, as Pedal Heaven and Raleigh must look to make up their early losses.
