Giacomo Nizzolo, riding with the Italian team, sprinted to his 6th victory of the season in the Giro del Piemonte Thursday, his second win in two weeks after taking the honors in Coppi Bernocchi on September 14th.
Nizzolo outgunned Fernando Gaviria (Etixx-Quick Step) in second, and Daniel Bennati (Tinkoff), third, to win the 100th edition of the Italian classic. After a fast-paced 207-kilometers, less than 40 riders arrived at the finish. In a burst of speed in the gradual uphill finish, Nizzolo accelerated over the line by almost a bike length and proved he is on form for the upcoming World Championships in Doha.
“This win gives me a lot of motivation for the World Championships,” exclaimed Nizzolo. “During the race, my legs felt good, especially on the climbs. But honestly, I did not feel so good this morning – almost like I was beginning to be sick. But I started to feel better in the race, and to win today shows me that I am on track and ready for the Worlds. This gives me a lot of confidence.”
