Top class cycling action on the programme for the Guildford Town Centre Races on Wednesday night

Wednesday: Guildford Town Centre Races
Some of the country’s top cycling road racers are set to fight it out for the spoils at the Guildford Town Centre Races on Wednesday evening (July 4th).
Run by Charlotteville Cycling Club, The Sigma Sports Elite Criterium will be a fast and formidable main event on Guildford’s notoriously tough course with its climb up the High Street setts and tight, narrow corners out of North Street.
Top racers such as Rory Townsend, Alex Paton, Max Stedman and Louis Rose-Davies from the Canyon Eisberg team will be in action just after 8pm at the event which is free to come and watch. There is real chance to get close to the racing and experience the pace of the cyclists as they speed past.
Rory Townsend was last year’s elite winner in Guildford with former winner Alex Paton also among the bunch in the final sprint finishing third. Paton is now back at Canyon Eisberg after spending a year at a rival team but will still be looking stop his team mate from making it three Guildford titles in a row.
Also on the race programme for the evening, is the Clyde and Co Local Heroes Criterium, a race for high-standard local riders, and the Neptune Women’s Criterium which attracts some of the country’s top female riders.
The racing gets underway at 6pm with the Hamptons International Youth Criteriums. These are ever-popular youth races where many top cyclists of the future get their first opportunity to ride at a big event. There are three races, Under 8s, Under 10s & Under 12, and Under 14s & Under 16s. In previous years, the biggest cheers have often been for the smallest riders.
Matt Legge, president of Guildford-based Charlotteville Cycling Club, said: “It’s a great night full of high-class cycling action. It’s an opportunity to watch the riders at close range and soak up the atmosphere.
“I’d like to thank our sponsors Hamptons International, Clyde and Co, Neptune and Sigma Sports whose backing allows us to run this elite evening of cycling”.
