A show of Shier Strength

With just over 6 minutes on the bunch as she crossed the finish line for the final time. A dominant performance by Ruth who was ably supported by a full team from Hutchinson-Brother UK with three team mates in the top 10 securing the team prize as well. The podium was completed by Ruth’s team mate Lydia Watts, who took the bunch sprint for second and Emily Proud in 3rd for Le Col RT.  On a day of unusual events for this race, the conditions were wet but the bunch was keen to get started with the first race of the Team Cup. The pace was high from the start with a range of attacks throughout the first few laps. However nothing was sticking until just over halfway through the race.

After a slew of attacks from the bunch, Ruth launched her attack exciting the spectators at the finish line with 5 laps to go. Impressively she kept pushing on to build to a 30 second lead at 6 to go. The iconic U Turn in the middle of this course meant the following bunch didn’t realise that Ruth had got away! Her team behind effectively disrupting any effort by the bunch to chase her down or bridge. The gap to the bunch continued to grow to 3mins with 3 laps to go and finally to 6 minutes by the chequered flag.

Team  (Hutchinson/ Brother UK) Report: What a team, what a race, what an indelible win for Ruth Shier at the Dave Peck Memorial road race. 🏆 Lydia Watts who threw her bike (at the finish line) to complete the 1-2 gave us a debrief of how the race unfolded:

“We wanted it hard and fast, and with the form we are carrying, we knew we could make this race our race if we worked as a team. By driving the pace high in such unsavoury conditions we were able to string out the bunch and whittle off riders. A few attacks went, but Heather Mayer, Harriett Dodd & Ione Johnson gave everything to keep the race together.

Eventually in the second half of the race, Ruth saw her chance and didn’t look back. As we disrupted any organised chase, Ruth’s gap grew from 30 secs, to 1 min, then 4 mins before raising a celebratory hand over the line more than 6 minutes ahead of the bunch.

With the rest of the podium still for the taking, Harriet dug deep on the final climb to lead us out into the sprint and secure four riders in the top 10. It was a tough race and I hope Becky Hair and Georgina Oakley recover quickly and are back racing soon!”
