A 517-mile non-stop ride around the North of Scotland for Thrombosis UK
On June 18th 2016, James ‘jimmy mac’ McCallum, a former Professional racing cyclist and commonwealth medalist, will race over 500 miles nonstop around the North of Scotland to raise funds for and awareness of thrombosis.
Date 3rd June, 2016
Why?
At the end of 2015, James’ family was hit by a heart-breaking tragedy when they lost a family member, Charlene, at the young age of 36. They lost a daughter, sister, aunt, fiancé, friend and a massive chunk of their family’s soul. Having seen first hand the impact the loss has had on all of their family, James decided to do something as a tribute to Charlene and to raise awareness of Thrombosis.
The Challenge
A 517-mile nonstop cycle around the recently marketed ‘North Coast 500’ route of Northern Scotland. The current ‘record’, set by professional adventurer, Mark Beaumont, is 38 hours, which we aim to break. The challenge will take place on 18th June 2016.
The Charity
Thrombosis remains a major cause of death in the UK yet many people have little or no understanding about the causes and effects of thrombosis, and how it can be prevented.
Every year, an estimated 25,000 people in the UK would die from a thrombosis contracted in hospital via blood clots if thrombosis prevention is not given. Thrombosis UK is a small charitable organisation working to create awareness of the dangers of Thrombosis-related conditions faced by the vast majority of the public.
The Rider
James McCallum, Or ‘Jimmy Mac’, is a Scottish former professional racing cyclist. He rode for the UK team, Rapha Condor–JLT and represented Scotland at the Commonwealth Games four times, winning a Bronze medal in 2006 at Melbourne, in the Scratch race.
To help raise continued awareness for Thrombosis UK, we will be documenting the challenge to make a short film, which will be screened after the event.
