Q & A: Lily Greenhalgh (Team 22)
Lily Greenhalgh of Team 22 says of her team, “they’re a great group of girls who are all really dedicated”. Here is Lily’s Q & A
1. How did you get into cycle racing …
Lily: My little sister saw Laura Trott at one of the Revolution rounds and decided that she wanted to be like her so we all went along to a cycling club
2. What’s your favourite discipline in cycling?
Lily: I like road cycling because the terrain is constantly changing
3. What is the best thing about bike racing?
Lily: You never know who is going to win – it could be anyone
4.What was the highlight of 2016 for you and why?
Lily: North West Youth Tour because it was a good course for me and I was feeling good on the day – everything went well for me
5. What was your favourite/most fun race of 2016
Lily: I loved the road race at the School Games as it was my last youth race on the road and everyone was representing their regions as part of a team
6. What was the toughest race of 2016 for you and why?
Lily: The toughest race would be the crit stages at North West Youth Tour as I crashed in the closing stages and lost all the time I’d gained the day before
7. If there was one thing you learned most in 2016 to help you go faster/better, what was that?
Lily: Being able to ride in a bunch and sheltering behind others so that I would have more energy later on in the race
8. What is the best piece of equipment clothing/bike/gadget) to do with racing you are proud of most?
Lily: My new team kit (from Bioracer), as it gives me a sense of belonging

9. What is your warm up routine for races – rollers or turbo? Music or no music?
Lily: I warm up on the rollers and I tend not to listen to music so that I can calm down and focus on the race ahead.
10. Will you stay in the UK to prepare for next season during the winter or get in a training camp or two abroad to get in some serious miles?
Lily: I’m very lucky that I’m going on a training camp with my team mates in the middle of February. I can’t wait to go and spend a week in the sun climbing mountains and having a great time.
11. When will you start training for 2017 and what comes first long steady miles or a mix of miles and efforts?
Lily: I started my training for 2017 in late October and I have been doing a mix of miles and efforts
12. What are the goals for 2017?
Lily: To make a good transition from youths to juniors and to beat my dad at Monsall hill climb next year!
13. Does winter training consist only of riding the bike or running/swimming/gym work (cross training)
Lily: I have been doing some gym work but other than that it mainly consists of riding my bike
14. Finally, what have you learnt over the years to best deal with the winter months on a bike!
Lily: To do a variety of training and to have a good pair of winter gloves!
