Q&A: Becky Womersley (Drops Cycling)
1. What was the highlight of the 2016 season for you?
Becky: When I was spending quite a bit of time in Europe, towards the end of the season, I spent a block of time out there starting in Belgium with a few Kermesses and I love them! It was a good week for the team in Belgium. We had been working on our lead out for quite a while and I think this was one of the first races that I did that we were able to get a train together.

2. What was your favourite race of 2016?
Becky: I think that’s quite a difficult question! The Belgium Kermesse’s were great and I will hopefully be doing a few more in 2017! I also enjoyed Ride London. It went World Tour this year and the crowds were insane. It was nice to ride it at the highest level when I had ridden it the previous two years when it was mostly British riders with a few big international teams/ riders. The Tour of Norway was also a great race. Most of the terrain suited my punchy style and the hill’s weren’t too long while the finish was always a sprint!
3. What was the toughest race of 2016 for you?
Becky: I would have to say Tour of Ardeche – although I strangely loved riding up Mont Ventoux, it was for sure the hardest day I have ever experienced on a bike. Ride London was also very fast and tough!
4. If there was one thing you learned most in 2016 to help you go faster/better, what was that?
Becky: Being part of a successful team puts a good pressure on you. This makes you want to train harder, to achieve more personally and as a team. Knowing the team aim and working together as a team to achieve goals like to deliver one person to the finish line first, I personally think makes you a better rider.
5. What is the piece of equipment/clothing that you are looking forward to most in 2017?
Becky: To get my bike back again! Not only does it look great, its the comfiest I have ever ridden! Our new shoes are going to look super smart too!
6. What is your warm up routine for races – rollers or turbo? Music or no music?
Becky: Standard 20 minute warm up normally on the rollers. I like a bit of music playing to get you going!
7. What’s your favourite discipline on the road; road racing/crits/time trials and why?
Becky: My favourite would be the road race. I just enjoy the different terrains and you also get to look up and see some incredible scenery, if you have chance! I do like a crit but it’s not my best discipline!
8. When will you start training for 2017 and what comes first – long steady miles or a mix of miles and efforts?
Becky: I started training properly at the beginning of November, although through the last few weeks of October, I did ride my bike but just for enjoyment to the cafe for a slice of cake! I have been doing a mixture of miles and watt bike/ turbo sessions depending on the weather here in Yorkshire!
9. What are the goals for 2017?
Becky: I haven’t actually sat down and thought about my goals as of yet. I hope to improve on my results out in Europe in the UCI races, a top 10 would be nice. I would also like to podium in a kermesse out in Belgium. For the past couple of years I have just been outside the top 10 in the National Champs, an improvement on that would be nice! Depending on form, my goals will change throughout the season!

10. Does winter training consist only of riding the bike or running/swimming/gym work (cross training)?
Becky: I do gym work as well as riding normally 2-3 sessions a week depending on what riding I have that week. I enjoy the gym, it breaks the riding up a little bit.
11. What have you learnt over the years to best deal with the winter months on a bike!
Becky: Ride with others, wear the right clothing and just enjoy! I actually don’t mind the cold/ rain, it makes you appreciate the warmth when you get home!
12. What was the best thing about riding for Drops in 2016?
Becky: All of it! The people involved made it for me.
