Tour of Britain Chat: Ryan Mullen
Talking to one of the leading time trial riders in the World, Ryan Mullen before stage 2 about his hopes and aims in the Tour of Britain 2017.
I started by asking the rider wearing the Irish champions kit how stage one of the race was for him? “The first stage was a lot harder than I expected it would be. There was this massive split in this 3 or 4k section of cross winds, and I’d stopped for a nature break before that, was the last rider on the road and it kicked off – fan-tastic”.
“Luckily, I had all five teammates in the same split so I said guys, let’s bring this one back.”
Asked about goals and roles in the race, Ryan replied “I am here for the time trial mainly. This years race is quite flat so my priority is a good time trial result and if that means a good GC result, then great.”
Talking about the announcement the team was in difficulties for 2018 and does that affect the here and now, Ryan said “we’re all bike riders and here with a job to do. It was a kick in the nuts when it happened and some guys are moving on and some are pinning their hopes on the team pulling through.”
This has been his second season with the team and he says it’s definitely been good. “I have definitely progressed a lot this year and feel I am an all-round better bike rider than last year. Every race I learn how to do something a little better than before. I may not be perfect but I’m getting better. I am also strong this year and healthier where as last year I wasn’t healthy. “

Ryan is noted for his great results in time trials and asked if he still works on that skill, he replies “that is like my selling point and I’d be foolish to let that go so I do some TT work three or four times a week.”
And finally, his strategy for the race with the time trial stage in mind, Ryan explains, on stage 1, “I was focused on not losing time so there was a time of five or six minutes at 520 watts to get over the climb so that was definitely not being conservative. But certainly the day before the time trial, I will do as little as possible!”
Good luck Ryan
