Report & Result: CC London Road Races
Sunday 29th April 2018 | From Fergus Muir
Lowestoft fireman Seb Herrod won the CC London road race for third and fourth cat riders, crossing the finish on Littlebury Hill almost a minute ahead of new CC Sudbury prospect Gary Munro.
The 55 mile race was held on a grey cold morning on the Wendens Ambo circuit which uses the E1 or “Old 32nd” time trial course as its eastern side while the other three legs climb and dip in and out of the valley of the River Cam.
Soon after the start Daniel Young and a PCH clubmate made a break and were joined by a VC Norwich member. After 90 minutes a chasing group formed including Herrod (Strada Sport) Munro and Neal Hughes (Stowmarket & District). Herrod alone made it across to the front and soon he and Young headed the race, just over a minute clear of a group of about 20
The men’s peloton on Littlebury Hill
As Herrod and Young came over the crest of the steepest section of Littlebury Hill with two laps to go, Herrod politely addressed your reporter: “Good morning, Ferg”. Shortly afterwards Young gave best – but still held on for third place. Behind Gary Munro was chasing, initially with Neal Hughes and later with Thomas Shanney (Redbridge CC). At the line Herrod had 55 seconds over Munro, with a gallant Young coming in at 1:18, followed by Shanney at 1:24.

Women’s Race
In the afternoon the CC London Women’s race was over the same hilly 51 miles and attracted a full field of 60 riders.
Twelve-Hour competition record holder Alice Lethbridge (Drag2Zero), who had done a 51 minute “25” only the previous afternoon, soon blew the race apart. She broke away with Kelly Murphy (NJC) and the pair soon had a minutes lead on strung out chasers led by Elizabeth Marvelly (Liv AWOL)
The women’s bunch at Wendens Ambo
Murphy punctured and one hour into the race Lethbridge had a substantial lead on a stretched-out group of 21 chasers. At Wendens Ambo with four laps remaining Lethbridge had two minutes on a depleted bunch that was followed by, at my count, five small groups, who were soon to be withdrawn by the Comms.
With three to go Ruth Summerford (TrainSharp) was chasing alone, 1:44 down on Lethbridge. At a cold and windy finish line Lethbridge, from Epsom, took the flag 3:13 clear of Summerford. Annileen Bosma (Rapha CC), who had attacked with 7 km to go, took third place, 7:41behind the winner. Kate Wootton (CT OnForm) took fourth, 8:29 down, leading the scattered remains of the bunch over the line.
