QUIZ TIME with a leading talent in Britain, first year Junior Leon Atkins (Fensham Howes MAS Design Junior Team), a new signing for the team looking to take his talent to international races…
Quiz Time: Leon Atkins (Fensham Howes MAS Design)
Leon, a first year junior, was the winner last weekend by over six minutes in the Classic Time Trial, the North Road Hard Riders and interestingly only a few days earlier, 5th fastest (qualifying) in the Senior National Individual Pursuit championship on the track, less than a second from qualifying for the finals. He’s broken comp records, dominated the National Trophy Youth Series and won the Youth Circuit Race championships in appalling conditions at Cyclopark.
Leon has been racing cyclocross and mountain bikes since he was in the Under 10s and then started road racing as an Under 12. In 2025, Leon has made the step up to racing in the Junior ranks with one of the country’s leading teams, Fensham Howes MAS Design Junior Team . He says of that opportunity “it is great to have such a strong group of riders in the team; I believe we can get some good results. The team is well run with a good history and we are lucky to also have the support of excellent sponsors behind us”.
Leon was seen racing cyclocross in the Winter in the junior ranks and when asked about his winter training, he says “my winter training has been going well, having had a short break after the cyclocross season and the build back up has been good. I’m doing my GCSEs this year and so I’m having to fit training around school as best I can”.
Q: What results are you most proud of from your cycling career so far?
Leon: I think I am most proud of some of my Time Trial achievements; getting a 17 minute 10 mile last year was a big goal of mine. Whereas on the road, winning the Otley and Ilkley crits were big achievements.
Q: What were your racing highlights in 2024?
Leon: Taking the National 2k Championship title on the track was a big goal of mine last year, so to pull that off was great! Winning the National Circuit Championships from a sprint finish was also a good one too.
Q: What race was the toughest in 2024?
Leon: The National Circuit Championship was a hard race due to the brutal conditions! The weather was apocalyptic with torrential rain for almost the full 1.5hrs of the race.
Q: When do you expect your season to start in 2025?
Leon: A: I will start my season with Kuurne-Kuurne on the opening weekend in March, quite a big step up from youth racing!
Q: What events in 2025 are the ones you are looking forward to most?
Leon: I am looking forward to finally being able to race my TT bike at UCI races, as well as some of the hillier one day races. Most of all I’m looking forward to getting back into the swing of racing.
Q: Finally, who are the key people who are helping you progress in the sport of cycling?
Leon: I have a great team of support around me currently, so I would say the main people would be my parents and my agent Jamie Barlow. Without them I would be in a very different position!
Good luck to Leon in 2025 balancing his racing with the school work… Certainly a name to watch as one of the country’s leading talents.
