Tour of Britain: Cav wins Finale as is Wiggins tops on overall - Third Stage Victory for the Manx Missile

2013_ToB_Stage8_Cavendish

Mark Cavendish wins just ahead of a future star in the pro ranks, Sam Bennett with UK Youth’s Chris Opie not far away in fifth

The Omega Pharma – Quick-Step team led out their sprinter Mark Cavendish brilliantly once again, this time in the 88km scramble at Tour of Britain Stage 8 in London.

Quickstep had four riders on the front for Cavendish approaching Big Ben in the final kilometres after chasing down breakaways all day. With 2.3km to go, OPQS was down to three riders and took over control on the front after Bardiani Valvole – CSF Inox moved up.

As OPQS regained control going into the final turns, Alessandro Petacchi led out Cavendish. A small gap formed between the two of OPQS on the front, but Petacchi sensed this and let up a bit to allow the Manx Missile to get back on his wheel before going full gas out of a turn into the straight final metres of the race.

It was a steady start off the line as the leaders in the race turned their legs over before Jack Bauer went on the attack.

Cavendish launched his sprint opening up a considerable gap on the other sprint contenders and went on to win his third stage at Tour of Britain. Sam Bennett (An Post – Chainreaction) was 2nd, and Elia Viviani (Cannondale ProCycling) was 3rd.

“I’m really happy and proud,” Cavendish said. “It’s always nice to win here in front of my British supporters. The stage was as we expected it to be. The race was really fast. We had support of other teams to control and we took things into our hands in the last laps. Once again the team was super strong! Martin Velits and Julien Vermote worked hard as usual. Michal Golas and Iljo Keisse did a great job in the last kilometres.”

Wiggins was as always well protected by his team during the stage.

“The lead out was also perfect once again. Petacchi also led me really well. He always stays calm and waits for the right moment. He went super fast into the second to last corner and then he led me well into the final corner. I only had to worry about my sprint. So, I am very happy. It was great to ride with him for the first time. We won three stages with him as my leadout, so I am really happy. Now I just want to say congratulations to team in Italy, who became the world champions today. They did a great race and we are all reading about it and happy for them.”

Wiggins puts as much energy into the champagne spraying as hie did the race.

Talking about the crowd, he said “It was really really nice. Last time we were here a couple of years ago there was a big crowd, but nothing compared to that today. What’s happened to British cycling in the last couple of years, especially this race, has been incredible.”

His final question was about which of his wins in the Tour of Britain was his favourite? “I was talking to Tim Harris [former professional & member of Tour organisation] yesterday, I think my favourite win at The Tour of Britain wasn’t actually in the pro Tour of Britain, it was in the first. We’re in the tenth year now but it was in the first year in the support race in London. My director, Brian Holm, was racing then and I didn’t even know him. I won that in the first year of the reborn Tour of Britain and for me that was pretty special.”

While the stage belonged to Cavendish, it was Bradley Wiggins who achieved what he set out to do and that was win the overall. Talking at the press conference, he said “At the moment it’s just relief that the job’s done” he said to a packed room. “From the minute you’ve won the time trial, you believe you can win the GC, but it’s not over until you’ve crossed that line.”

The crowds were yet again huge as the break heads for the start/finish to complete another lap leading the race.

“The lead was only 26 seconds, so there is plenty to think about like if you crash before 3km to go. It was a pretty hectic finish as everyone wants to win the last stage.” From day one, the battle of who is the most popular was won by Wiggins if the number of banners for him was anything to go by. “You can’t fail to hear the crowd. It’s a bit like the Olympics.”

“I expected it as every year the race finishes in London it’s been fantastic. It was the same today.” Going round the race behind the peloton, the crowd was huge with only a small section in the middle devoid of spectators. The rest of the 8.8 kilometre course was packed many people deep to see the race. Talking to riders, the race in London certainly meets with the approval of the visiting pros who are amazing London is closed down so they can race by the iconic landmarks.

The break reaches the far end of the circuit at the Tour of London on a lap of 8.8km

The race certainly provided Wiggins with a target to motivate him on the way to the Worlds next week. “There was an element of going through the motions in all the races early in the season” he said as his wife Cath and children watched from the side. Wiggins had already done the route of the race and looked at it long and hard and had the strength of a team to protect the lead his time trial win gave him.

“I came out this week with the commitment that I showed last year. I crashed on day two, was straight up and straight back in the bunch, unfazed by it. That was a sign that I was back to where I was last year, more than fitness levels and what numbers say. It’s nice to be able to come to perform to your potential and please everybody. Everyone goes home happy.”

No picture is complete without Big Ben in it!

On the support at the roadside in London for Stage Eight… “London’s so big now that we were virtually racing in London yesterday at Guildford, it feels like London. Just every day now in this race, even in the rain in Scotland, Carlisle and Kendal people were coming out in their tens of thousands.

“The reception that the race has had, the team have had and I’ve had has been overwhelming at times and nice to see. It’s nice to come to a race like this where it is just about the sport and people come out and watch it and love it, and I enjoy it more when it’s like that to be honest.”

On whether he will defend his title in 2014…
“I think so definitely. The race is probably going to include a time trial every year now and Haytor could become an annual thing so it’s starting to build a tradition with it. Caerphilly Mountain has been in there the last few years and that’s a bit of a tradition of the race. I’d love to, it seems like a good idea now but we’ll see what happens next year, if I’m in good form and I can do myself proud.”

“That’s it really, I came here last year and wasn’t in the form to do anything and it’s not nice racing like that. It’s nice to come in in form and perform at your best to please everybody, so everyone goes home happy.”

The race
A six-strong break formed after only a lap with the rider applying the most pressure being former Endura Racing rider Jack Bauer. It was easy to see to what Pete Williams (IG Sigma Sport) goal was when he attached the break to win the first sprint. Ángel Madrazo (Movistar) was being greedy and wanted both jerseys but Williams was not going to let me have it with out a big fight which eventually cost him the jersey.

It appeared as though Williams had taken that jersey by winning enough points in the third intermediate sprint, but according to officials a wayward hand in the lead-out before it saw Williams docked points and the honour awarded to Madrazo. After the break was reeled in, more riders had a go like youngster Alex Peters and time trial champion Alex Dowsett.

2013_ToB_Stage8_12

Alex Dowsett was very active in the race ahead of the World Time Trial titles.

What was also notable was how well the British teams got stuck in. UK Youth helped in the chase for the break and had a train going at the front of the race to help Chris Opie to a personal best of 5th place in the bunch gallop. Sigma Sport were right behind their rider Pete Williams as well and at the front of the race bringing breaks back so Williams had a chance at the points.

The stage may have been about Cavendish and Wiggins for the crowd but the British teams showed they can compete with the bigger teams and who knows how much better they could compete if they had the same diet of that level of racing…
