In summary, the Bedford 3 Day was held over five stages around the town of Bedford. Grace Garner (RST Racing) started well with a stage win but then lost the jersey in the Team Time Trial won by Epic Cycles – Scott. Stage 3 was won by eventual race winner Nicola Juniper and then stage 4, a time trial was won by Molly Weaver. The final stage came down to a big group sprint up a tough climb and Gracer Garner finished as she started, with a victory.

VeloUK spoke to Nicola Juniper afterwards who explained – “My team isn’t involved in the team series so we came here with a small team as we had two off doing the RTTC Circuit Series so it was more a training weekend to put in some good efforts. We took each stage as it came and I think we podiumed on every stage and then just tried to hold onto the jersey”.

“We didn’t want to get the jersey too early because we didn’t want to defend it. On this final stage, it was about trying to sit in. I think there were ten of us within 18 seconds of each other so it was tricky knowing who was doing what. It was a full on race and I couldn’t ease up at all.”

Asked for a key moment of the three days, Nicola replied “I think from start to finish really. I got third on the first stage and we had a really good team time trial. We had only four riders and were only eight seconds off Epic who had six and finished with five. Then I had a win yesterday and a second in the TT this morning, so I think the whole round and whole series has been pretty good to be honest.”

Nicola explained she did the race first in 2008 and then had a break two years ago before returning to it last year. “The standard in women’s racing has gone up, dramatically really” she says.

Asked about the final stage, Nicola explained “the hill was a bit draining after three days of racing and there was a headwind on the back section with a few drags, but as you saw, we finished with quite a big group so it wasn’t hard enough to split it too much.”

“It was aggressive with breaks coming and going but everyone is a bit tired, so a few things we let go before they were wound in. “

Having trained over this climb many times during my time in Bedford, I had forgotten how steep it can be – glad I wasn’t racing over it six times!

The bunch using all the road on the climb…  far be it for me to say but I’d advise not to as the road was open (not closed in any way) and we saw some real idiots on the road during the race.
