Latest update for the Pedal Power Dig In at the Dock Open Cyclocross race on 4th January 2015, is that after some course lengthening and added technical features, the race will hold a rider line up of over 150 racers.
This in itself makes it one of the largest fields for a one day, one off ever held in Scotland, and as well as the Pro riders the organisers have selected some raw novices to make a debut on the fast and challenging course, as well as the addition of some of Scotland’s top Youth category riders..
The best riders already down to ride are top Scottish professional riders and previous winners James McCallum (whatsyourmeta.com) and Rab Wardell (Orange Monkey Pro Team) with popular local Falkirk racer David Lines (Velosure-Starley-Primal) sure to me in the mix for a result, as well as former Scottish Champion and Olympic Development rider Iain Paton (Scott/Pioneer/Syncross).
The top pro riders will take on Ridley Scottish Cyclocross Series Veteran Champion Stevie Jackson (Glasgow United), and hot to trot Women’s series winner and Scottish Champion Isla Short, who will announce on the day the name of her new team before she embarks on the U.C.I World Cup Mountain Bike circuit for the season. With 25 female riders in the Morning Glass Designs supported class you have an incredibly diverse field for spectators to cheer on, something the organisers have always championed since the inception of the race.
With that in mind Event Organiser David Hamill and John McComisky have devised a series of prizes such as the Dirt School award of a days coaching for the loudest most colourful cycling club that attends. The fun prizes go along with the dollar hand up raffle which has serious backing from Ridley/ Lazer, Endura, Hardie Bikes and Giant giving a great chance for any on the 150 participants to walk away with a prize on the day.
Local interest centres on Jimmy Smellie who for the fourth year in a row will put up a prize for the best young rider in the race. Jimmy a former Scottish Champion, is also on the organising committee of the race and is keen to see his home-town in Bo’ness encourage new cyclists.
The event has also maintained race sponsorship from Pedalpower in West Calder, one of Scotland’s largest retail cycle shops, who will be bringing down their full shop Clothing range at January Sale prices as well as having a on site presence from renowned manufacturers Giant, Cannondale and Ridley in the pro cycling arena zone.
There are further entertainments in the shape of live commentary, the Sambalistic Samba Band, a collectable race programme with a free cowbell, face painting as well as the now traditional Raffle competition to finish the day off in style.
Throughout the day the Grange Kitchen will provide healthy hot and cold food to riders and spectators alike.
If you are looking for a healthy start to the year , the only place to be on the 4th of January is Bo’ness, action starts from 11am on the shoreline, with the hour long race scheduled for 1pm. Come along and make some noise as well as enjoy a carnival atmosphere.
The Organisers wish to thank it’s event partners: Pedal Power West Calder, Falkirk Community Trust, Falkirk Council and Grounds Department, Ridley, Lazer, Dirt School, The Grange Kitchen, Giant, Cannondale, Mark Young, Jammy Johnstone, Scottish Cyclocross, East Kilbride Cycling Club, Craig Hardie, Jimmy Smellie, Alan Anderson, Chris Feltham.
