Stage 1 – Scully takes the lead in Normandy
To accompany the 143 starters on staged 1 was heavy rain and freezing cold for the longest stage of the Tour of Normandy 2015. After 20 kilometres, two riders managed to get a gap on the peloton before being joined 10 km later by three more.

Maximilian Schachmann (AWT-Greenway), Thomas STEWART (Madison Genesis), Laurent Vanden Bak (Leopard Development), Mads Christensen (Riwal Platform Cycling Team) and Connor Mc CONVEY (Team 3M) were given there freedom by the BMC controlled peloton.
With a maximum gap of 4’25 at KM 50, the break started to split in the latter stages of the race. Vanden Bak cracked after 129km, then Mads Christensen blew as rest started to attack each other as BMC were playing with the gap which yoyo’d between 30 seconds and 1’30. Finally, on the finishing circuit of 30 km, the break was caught one by one and the race finished in a bunch kick with British rider Owain Doull getting 7th on the stage.
Best post race tweet came from mark McNally who replied to another by his team Madison Genesis saying he’d crash. Liverpool’s McNally simply replied “I didn’t crash I just had a lie down because I was sleepy”…
Hope you’re okay Mark ….
