Success for Steve Joughin’s Academy
(by Jim Golden)
The recently launched Pro Vision Steve Joughin Academy team has got off to a flying start with 17 year old Ryan Coulton leading the National Junior Series after snatching the win in the second counting event, the Tour of the Mendips over 181 kms of rolling countryside close to the Cheddar Gorge.
‘What a dream start for the team, I could not be more delighted. I had a lot of faith in the lads but I was not expecting success so quickly,’ said team sponsor Joughin of the squad looked after by his former soigneur, Peter Kay.
Only Ryan and Owen Line took the start in Pro Vision colours with Morgan Hughes selected to ride for Wales and 16 year old Tomos Owens ineligible due to his third category status. He went to Belgium to ride kermesses.
Stage 1: The weather was cold and wet which took its toll on the field with many not finishing, leaving approx 30 riders to contest the result. An early break formed of 12 riders with Ryan Coulton in attendance a max gap grew to 1m 30s then with 2 laps remaining it all came back together. Owen Line attacked which caused a split and riders came across to form a new leading group of15 riders who went on to contest the finish, with Owen taking 1st and the overall and Ryan in 3rd place.
Stage 2: The day dawned bright and sunny as we set off from Bristol Y.H.A. in good spirits. The riders who were D.N.F. on stage 1 were allowed to start so 80 took the start.
The roads were heavy with one really difficult climb. A break of 5 soon formed with Ryan Coulton in attendance the lead went out to 3m 30s Ryan was comfortable and was now leader on the road. Owen in the jersey got baulked on the steep climb his race (jersey) over but still finished in the 2nd group. Mean while Ryan was attacking pushing on. On the climb up to the finish he was pipped for 1st place but by virtue of the time he took the jersey and overall.
This coming weekend sees the team return to Belgium for a u.c.i 1.1 Classic GP-Bati-Metallo 127km.
