NORTH BUCKS FESTIVAL OF CYCLING 28 & 29 MAY – AN EXTRAVAGANZA OF ROAD RACING
Over the late May Bank Holiday weekend, the North Bucks Road Club is hosting a feast of top class cycle racing based on Newton Longville on the western boundary of Milton Keynes. There are 7 races with over 450 competitors – in terms of participation, that is a huge racing event in the UK, on open roads.
The event includes the British Cycling National Masters Road Race Championships and the 4th round of the National Women’s Road Series, which is the grand finale on Sunday afternoon –and at 75 miles, a challenging proposition. On Saturday morning and afternoon, and on Sunday morning, there will be two concurrent races taking place making for plenty of action to watch. Races start at 0810/1315 on Saturday, and at 0830/1245 on Sunday.
Several of the 2015 Masters Champions are returning to defend their title including Ashley Cox, Ralph Carter and Jim Moffatt. Amongst the Masters field is also past World Pursuit Champion Colin Sturgess – though there is some doubt over his actual appearance, following a recent crash at the Lincoln Grand Prix. With top quality fields from all over the UK there will be some exciting “battles†fought out on the roads of North Bucks to decide the 2016 Champions.
Riders to highlight – AB (30-39 age group): Ashley Cox, Justin Hoy and Jamie Pine; C (40-44 age group): Chris McNamara; D (45-49 age group): Antony Wallis- (can he replicate his domination of Hog Hill in a 75 mile road race?), Vince Halpern and Martin Smith; E (50-54): Roy Chamberlain, Andy Eagers and Malcolm Smith; F (55-59): Ralph Carter and Jim Moffatt.
The Women’s Grand Prix on Sunday has a full field of 80 riders including series leader and winner of round 2, Nikki Juniper, Team Ford Ecoboost, winner of the opening round, Kim Ashton, Casp Racing, and a full squad of 8 riders from Team Breeze (British Cycling’s Endurance Academy Olympic Development Team). With the Aviva Tour of Britain in June, and Rio not that far away, this is an ideal “step up†race.
As part of developing a wide range of races there is also a 2-3-4 category race on Sunday morning over 54 miles, with 58 riders taking part. As all races are being run to the standards of a National Championship this will add an extra element to their experience.
The course is 10.7 miles long, to be covered 5-8 times or 54-86 miles. Whilst there are no major climbs it is a sporting, rolling course with few flat sections, apart from the 250metres finishing area.
Race Director, Wayne Thomas is delighted at the manner in which this 2 day weekend has grown over the past three years from 300 riders to over 450. He commented that the team’s decision to have a varied program, not just Masters has been a proven success.
The Newton Longville circuit of 10.7 miles is a sporting rolling road course, without major hill climbs it has only a few flat stretches resulting in a course that wears down a field. The finish is arrow straight and flat for 250 metres, following a 650m and 500m “climb†in the last 2Km.
