Premier Calendar circus moves to Wales on Sunday for the tough Welsh GP over the Tumble and ten lumpy circuits of Abergavenny

Winner of the British Road Race Championships on the course a few years ago now, Kristian House, wears number 1 at the head of a young Rapha team for a race over 103 miles. The race starts and finishes in Abergavenny taking in the pretty village of Usk, Raglan, Monmouth, and includes the mountain climb of the ‘Tumble’ before returning to Abergavenny for ten laps of the lumpy finishing circuit.

The two teams with strong outfits, Raleigh and UK Youth have strength in depth with Raleigh having their two Premier Calendar hitters, series leaders Evan Oliphant and Tom Stewart whilst third placed Chris Opie rides for UK Youth. Raleigh got five riders in the break at Stockton last weekend and will be looking to make the numbers up front count for them in the quest for a win.

Winner at Stockton, Ian Wilkinson (UK Youth) has earned himself a holiday and Opie will be backed up by Yanto Baker, Marcin Bialoblocki, Niklas Gustavsson, James Lowsley-Williams, local boy Jon Mould and a Welsh ‘ex pat’ Rob Partridge.

Team UK Youth’s Ian Wilkinson wins in Stockton and gets a holiday from his team as a reward ….

Outside bets for a ‘ride; are the two Georges; Harper (Felt-Colbornes-Hargroves Cycles) and Atkins (GB Academy) whilst it will be interesting to see how Ian Bibby rides if he’s back from the Pyrenean training camp. Also down to ride for Madison Genesis is the winner from Beaumont, Dean Downing whilst the hilly course may suit the likes of Liam Holohan and Alex Peters.

Series leader Evan Oliphant (Raleigh).

Node 4 showed well in Stockton with Mike Northey and seem to be getting stronger as the season continues whilst IG Sigma Sport have riders coming back from injury including fourth placed in the series Peter Hawkins.

The course is rolling, twisting and turning through the area around Abergavenny over roads many rides will know. It’s the climb of the ‘Tumble’ that may be the key to the race, or at least the selection made at the front of the race. The finishing circuit is said to have a climb on it and insiders expect a small group sprint and not the bunch kick from the big break in the Stockton GP.
