On a day of crashes which may have finished the hopes of many an overall contender, half the peloton were left to contest the finish and while the likes of Cavendish were missing, many of the sprinter favourites were there.

Goss, Grepiel, Petacchi, van Hummell and of course that man Sagan were all in the mix after GreenEdge had seemingly used up all their riders trying to bring back the break which again held off the peloton until the final kilometre. It was left to Lotto to take up the leadout after a short spell at the front by BMC with Burghart and Cadel Evans staying out of trouble on the trick finale.

As the fastest riders in the world made their finale move, the joker in the pack was Peter Sagan who came from behind Greipel, passed him like he was standing still and then proceeded to do his Incredible Hulk impression so apt for a man in green! What a finish!

Peter Sagan: “I’m very happy when I can win a stage like today. Yesterday, I was unlucky with the crash but also content that nothing was broken and that I didn’t have any injuries. I don’t want to be compared with other riders, I want to be Peter Sagan. I was near the front when the crash happened but the two riders who were ahead were pushed and this forced me to brake; behind me was Vincenzo Nibali who also had to brake and behind us was the crash. This is the race, this is the Tour de France and it’s very nervous. The accident was on a downhill and we were going very fast and it’s very dangerous.”

“Another win and I called this one ‘The Hulk’.

“I want the green jersey and I think I can hold on to it all the way to Paris. This is already more than I ever expected. It’s surprised me too. I wanted to do well but I need to say that this is only the start of the Tour de France and tomorrow is when the race really begins because it’s the climbs and I think that after two weeks, by the start of the third week, it’s going to be really hard. I think I did well today because the other sprinters are a little tired and maybe that’s the key to this win.”

The losers: With all the crashes today, the big losers of time on the day included Scarponi, Brajkovic, Schleck, Valverde (2.09); Cobo (2.21), Gesink (3.31) and  Luis Leon Sanchez (6.02), and worst of all from Garmin, Hesjedal at 13.24 along with Millar, Dan Martin and  Christian Vande Velde. A bad day for Garmin-Sharp for sure.

The yellow jersey Fabian Cancellera knows his time as race leader may well be up as the race heads into the mountains for stage 7. “I’m just going on and on to see how long I can hold on to this yellow jersey but, for sure, tomorrow, we’re going uphill and it’s going to be really, really hard. And I know already that it’s going to be the end of my days in yellow.”

“Fränk [Schleck] lost time but we’ll go on like we have to go on, just like always. We have Andreas Klöden and we still have someone up there. Fränk lost all these minutes because of the crash today but I don’t think that we should say, ‘Okay, it’s over!’ You can put a lot of other teams under pressure and maybe that can help us and put us in a better situation when the others are under pressure. When we come to the mountains and he’s out there, something could work in our favor.”

“Okay, we have to employ different tactics but RadioShack-Nissan-Trek will still be switched on and we’re not going to give up until the end. It was a pretty hectic day and crashes like that are never nice especially when it happens just next to you. I’m not sure how the crash happened; I had to concentrate and look forward. You have to look out for yourself and make sure you’re not one of those who ends up on the ground – it’s part of our job. And I try my best to have the team riding on the front and so on but when there’s a crash in the 20th position it’s hard. When there’s a crash in 60th position, it’s also difficult. Fränk lost time today but we have to go on and look forward to the next few days.”

Video Summary of the Stage

The Race
The sixth stage saw crashes, lots of them and they didn’t discriminate against who they took down to the tarmac. Double stage winner Andre Grepiel fell twice, team leaders including Gesink and Valverde were among them but worst of all, Garmin Sharp saw their Giro winner Hesjedal finish over 13 minutes back in a crash David Millar is reported to have said was the scariest ever where riders were ‘banging into each other at 60 to 70kph’. The crash happened on a descent.

The race hadn’t even started when there was crash involving Richie Porte and Jurgen van den Broeck (Lotto) in the neutralised zone with still 207 kilometres to go.

Once the peloton had managed to get through the neutralised zone without any more mishaps, the race was on and with only five kilometres gone, Dave Zabriskie, who won the opening time trial of the 2005 Tour when he beat Lance Armstrong by two seconds, went clear chased by three riders. He was soon joined by Davide Malacarne (EUC), Romain Zingle (COF) and Karsten Kroon with Malacarne the best on GC after five stages in 66th, 3’34” behind Cancellara.

Two of the riders had tasted success of a stage victory before, Zabriski as explained already and Karsten Kroon who won in Plouay on Bastille Day in 2002.

While the quartet out front made the most of the freedom the peloton had given them, the chase eased off around the 35 kilometre mark whilst the bunch waited for fallen riders after another crash which included the likes of Westra, Cantwell, Greipel, and Gutierrez. Another of the crash victims was a Frenchman who finished 10th overall in 2011, Jean-Christophe Peraud (ALM) as well as Rabobank’s leader Robert Gesink and Movistar’s GC rider, Alejandro Valverde.

With André Greipel looking to take a hat-trick of stage wins in the Tour de France, something only 11 men have achieved before, it wasn’t going well for the German and even his director sportif was talking about him not sprinting at the end of the stage. The crashes certainly played into the hands of the break who managed to open up a gap of 6’45” after 51 kilometres, the maximum they were given by the peloton which was now gaining speed into the second hour of the race.

Mid stage, besides the crashes, there wasn’t a lot going on other than Dave Zabriskie winning the one and only KoM and Goss beating Cavendish in the intermediate sprint ahead of Sagan. Once those hostilities were done with, it was back to the familiar faces of Yaroslav Popovych, Jens Voigt, Adam Hansen, Sebastian Langeveld and Peter Weening doing their bit at the front of the peloton as the rain fell for a while. Greipel meanwhile was caught up in another crash but after a short chase, managed to make his way back to the front of the peloton and hopefully safe from any more ‘chutes’.

As the peloton continued to reel in the break and all looked good for a big bunch kick, suddenly with only 25 kilometres to go there was chaos on the grandest scale for le Tour. A fall midway down the peloton saw 20 to 30, maybe more, riders go down and there were riders and bikes strewn all over the road.

As mechanics dashed out of the cars, along with medics to tend to the riders, GC contender Franck Schleck was dazed and without a bike. The cameras picked out riders and it was soon clear that the crash had taken down so many of the GC contenders. One thing was certain, many were going to lose their chance of winning the Tour. The peloton was now at full speed as GreenEdge chased the break down which was stubbornly refusing to be caught as BMC got their own train going alongside them to protect Cadel Evans.

Garmin’s Hesjedal was bloodied from his fall but riding. His time loss though was significant and his goal of winning the Tour and doing the Giro/Tour de France double, over. Ahead of him, lots of small chase groups came together and the chase was on to lose as little time as possible. There was no chance of catching the leaders but a loss of two minutes was going to be better than a loss of 13 minutes which is what Hesjedal lost on the stage.

It wasn’t only the GC contenders who lost out. World Champion Mark Cavendish also lost the chance of a sprint win but looking at the bigger picture, at least was seemingly okay and riding.

As well as losing time, there were also riders whose injuries forced them to abandon. Tom Danielson (Garmin) and Davide Vigano (Lampre) for example, Wouter Poels,a Tour of Britain stage winner, too.

Back in the race, there were two drag races going on, one with the break trying to defy being caught by the peloton where it was left to Greenedge to chase them down and behind the peloton, another group of the crash victims trying to limit their losses.

That drag race continued all the way to the line. Whilst the peloton were all fighting for position in the final few k, Zabriski made one final move to try and win the stage, attacking and going it alone but after all day out front, 115 miles or more, his legs were not able to do what his heart was telling them he wanted and he was caught as the race entered the final kilometre.

Greenedge by this time had run out of men at the front and there was a fight for Greipels wheel but Sagan wasn’t giving that up and in the sprint to the line, it was the incredible Hulk who had timed his sprint to perfection and gone was Matt Goss’s chance at his first victory and Greipel’s chance of the hat trick.

Sagan had yet again won the day and while the sensation of the last few years, Cavendish, crossed the line over six minutes back, the new sensation Sagan was hamming it up for the cameras again with the exuberance of a youngster capable of delighting fans around the world…. Welcome to the Tour de France Peter Sagan.

More Reactions:

Frank Schleck: “The time loss is what it is. I wasn’t one of the top favorites for the overall, but this is, of course, untimely. I mean, I have been feeling good since the start in Liège. We have had an amazing time with Fabian in yellow and I was feeling confident about what is to come. Now that I’ve lost this amount of time, it changes things. We’ll see with the team if we change my strategy. This is cycling: there are good times and bad times.” Also losing out were possible GC contenders Jani Brajkovic (Astana) and Alessandro Valverde (Movistar).”

Schelck added: “A bunch of riders were going maybe 70kph and there was a crash on a big road – when it’s that speed you can’t really avoid it. I don’t think I have anything broken. Just some pain in my shoulder, some pain in my hip and we’ll check my knee. So we’ll see. If there is nothing broken I will be there tomorrow.”

André Greipel: “I crashed two times today, the first time I felt my shoulder dislocate for a moment. I thought not to sprint, but the other guys convinced me to, even after my second crash, Greg Henderson was able to persuade me to go for it. That I came second in the end is nearly unbelievable, all the more because I was hindered in the last corner.”

Greg Henderson: “It was a crazy stage with different crashes. André told me he wouldn’t sprint, but I said of course you’re going to sprint. First he was thinking about testing in the intermediate sprint, but I advised not to. He just had to put everything on the final sprint. The green jersey isn’t a concrete target, but if you don’t sprint today you definitely aren’t in the race for it any longer.”

“When he fell again a bit later on I again had to talk him into it. After five times we changed his mind, but I told him I would lead him into the last 200 meters. He didn’t even had to win, just sprinting and seeing what was possible. This is the Tour de France: things happen here that don’t happen in other races, here you sometimes have to take risks.”
