Event Press Release: All the pre-race plans are coming together nicely for the 10-year anniversary edition of The Ilkley Cycle Races and the town are looking forward to a great event on June 28th. Mid-summer can give us such fine evenings, and this year’s event organisers are hopeful for another gloriously sunny and well attended race night in Ilkley town centre.

Ilkley’s got the lead motorbike, chip timing, BC podium truck, commentator, sports photographers and all the “big race” trimmings – and not least, the support of a very enthusiastic crowd! With five different races covering youth racing, men’s and women’s categories two, three & four as well as elite racing, there’s an opportunity for almost any road racer to compete on a proper road circuit!

Those racing earlier in the evening can make an evening of it and stay to watch the National Series races that follow later in the evening’s programme and those competing in the National Series can make it a multi-day excursion and soak in all Wharfedale has to offer between the racing in Otley on the Wednesday and The Ilkley Cycle Races on Friday.

There is a great atmosphere at this free family event, with the first race starting at 5.30pm and a packed schedule ensuring interest throughout the evening. If you’ve been before, you’ll remember the steep 200m long climb up Ridings Road but this quickly becomes easier when encouraged by the vocal support of the crowd and the racing soon gets quicker as the gradient flattens out before a very fast corner sweeps competitors onto Grove Road for an extremely rapid return to the crowds lining The Grove.

Thanks to the overwhelmingly generous support of a number of local businesses including Lister Horsfall, MAS Design, Ilkley Car Audio, 93 Cycles, and of course Ilkley Cycling Club, every single race includes a sprint lap this year with prizes including cycling gear, vouchers & hampers, not to mention the opportunity for a stay in Chalet Cornillon, A Traditional French Alpine Chalet, thanks to www.mountainchalet.co.uk.

The race organisers look forward to welcoming all those wanting to ride and encourage racers to sign-up via the British Cycling website before entries close on June 7th.
