22nd July: The West Riding Track League, based at the 1894 grass velodrome at Roundhay Park in Leeds, has seen huge benefits from the growth in cycling at grass roots level on the back of the British team’s success. This has led to a busy season on Monday nights despite all the weather can throw at us.

Last Sunday, we held an Open meeting incorporating the National Mens 400m Champs, with a National Endurance Round and the British Schools Cycling Association National Grass Championship, bringing together both experienced seniors and young beginners in a full day of racing. With excitement from Matthew Rotherham suffering a rolled tub (use glue next time), and a relegation, the final was deservedly won by Andrew Leverton, with Jamie Steather and Bruce Croall taking second and third respectively. The Endurance round was won soundly by Lewis Meadows with Ben Elliot and Jamie Streather at second and third.

The most hilarity was caused by the senior slow race which we intend to formalise next year into a British champs. It didn’t help with serious cheating by going sideways and bunny hopping into reverse. Needless to say the guilty riders accepted relegation without complaint.

The BSCA event was also a full event with an omnium format for the youngsters based on a Sprint, Pursuit and Scratc race.

Many thanks to all the volunteers who gave up their free time to help the event run well.
