Tour of Spain: Stage 20: Menchov Wins

Denis Menchov (Katusha) could finally smile after a bad season when the Russian, after being part of the day’s break, rode away from his fellow escapee Richie Porte (Sky) in the last section of the Bola del Mundo to take the stage win.

The break, which formed at km.18 mark and built a maximum lead of more than 11 minutes included Juanjo Cobo (Movistar), Maxime Bouet and Matteo Montaguti (Ag2r), Fredrik Kessiakoff and Kevin Seeldraeyers (Astana), Klaas Lodewyck (BMC), David de la Fuente (Caja Rural), Leonardo Duque (Cofidis), Romain Sicard (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Thomas Peterson (Garmin-Sharp), Mikhail Ignátyev and Denis Menchov (Katusha), Denys Kostyuk (Lampre), Eros Capecchi (Liquigas), Kevin de Weert and Gert Steegmans (Omega Pharma-QuickStep), Simon Clarke (Orica-GreenEdge), Tiago Machado (RadioShack-Nissan), Richie Porte (Sky) and Simon Geschke (Argos-Shimano).

In the GC fight, Joaquim Rodríguez (Katusha) showed that he would have been a worthy winner of the Vuelta a España. Rodríguez told Dani Moreno to take up the pace at the foot of the Bola del Mundo climb. Some metres before, he put in a big dig dropping Valverde (Movistar). Then he put on a burst of speed and distanced Alberto Contador, who dropped and finished 44 seconds down on Rodríguez.

Valverde overtook Contador and crossed the line 19 seconds ahead of him but Contador managed to keep a lead of 1 minute and 16 seconds from Alejandro Valverde, and 1 minute and 37 seconds from Rodríguez, second and third respectively.

Denis Menchov: “It was part of the plan that I’d break away and try and stay ahead as long as possible. It was important to be two riders from Katusha in the lead. It’s been very useful for me to have Mikhail Ignatiev on my side in the first part of the stage. We had in mind that ‘Purito’ might need my help in the finale. We concluded the Vuelta very well with the spot on the podium and this stage victory. We couldn’t aim for more.”

“I never ceased to work hard and be professional but sometimes it just doesn’t work out. The Tour de France hasn’t gone as I expected this year. At the Vuelta, already on stage 1, I realized that I hadn’t recovered from the Tour and the Olympic Games. It wasn’t possible for me to ride at my best level, so I worked for ‘Purito’.”

“I’m very happy with this victory, it’s a relief. Recently, I didn’t manage to do what I wanted. But the Vuelta is a huge achievement. ‘Purito’ has demonstrated to being a great champion. He kept fighting all the way till the end. He can be happy with himself even though he wanted to win and he was ready for that.”

Alberto Contador: “It’s been a hard and complicated stage. Katusha and Movistar looked very motivated to send a few riders in the breakaway and make my race difficult. Fortunately, my team did an extraordinary work and then, Euskaltel rode to win the stage with Igor Anton.”

“I became worried when Alejandro Valverde tried to attack. I had to respond. Once I passed that moment, I was closer to winning the Vuelta. On the other hand, when Joaquim [Rodriguez] attacked with one kilometer [1.9km] to go, I knew the difference would be minimal, as I remembered how it went two years ago between Ezequiel Mosquera and Vincenzo Nibali. I felt a big pain in my legs but so many fans encouraged me that I managed to make it. Now I want to enjoy what I’ve achieved.”

Bjarne Riis, team manager of Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank: “Tomorrow we’ll win the Vuelta, hopefully. Bola del Mundo was a tough climb but Alberto has made it up there. He was not super. He obviously didn’t have good legs but it wasn’t easy for anybody. Alberto’s main goal was to survive.”

Alejandro Valverde: “It’s been an extremely hard stage, not only because of the course and the speed but also the climate conditions. I’ve had a hard time in the downhill of the first climb because I was really cold. It was raining. The team has been great in supporting me. Slowly but surely, I found good sensations again.”

“In the Navacerrada, I had to try because nobody knew what could happen. I didn’t know Bola del Mundo, except in video, but I knew what to expect. When ‘Purito’ attacked, I set my own rhythm. In the last kilometer, I pursued Alberto because I didn’t want ‘Purito’ to take the second place overall away from me.”

Most aggressive rider of the day and King of the Mountain Simon Clarke (Orica-GreenEdge): “As good as I could be, a lot of luck was needed for collecting enough points at the top of the climbs. I gave myself every chance I had. I was so nervous for trying to get in the breakaway, since it took about two hours on many previous stages for a group to go.”

“I thought it was gonna be near impossible. I had to not worry about what [Thomas] De Gendt or [David] Moncoutié was going to do but just ride my race, as I knew that Rodriguez was going to get points at the finish. I only had two points lead. If I wasn’t in the breakaway, it was game over. In the end, it worked, but it’s been a lot of stress. But I’m not a climber, I’m an opportunist! I took the opportunities full time at the Vuelta. I always looked for the breakthrough result and it came with a stage win and a jersey. It finally came through. It’s huge!”
