PRESS RELEASE FROM WELSH SWI TEAM

Competition has begun in Cali, with round one of the UCI Track World Cup now under way with Team SWI Welsh Cycling picking up a medal.

Team SWI Welsh Cycling took their first medal at the UCI Track World Cup, claiming silver in the Women’s Team Pursuit Final. They faced Italy in the final on Thursday evening, just a few hours after the qualifiers took place earlier in session. Posting a time of 3:30.891 the Team took almost 2 seconds off their qualifying time. It was the first competitive event for Ciara Horne, Amy Roberts and Elinor Barker to compete in together, with the trio working well to get a result.

Team SWI Welsh Cycling qualified fastest in the Women’s Team Pursuit. Horne, Roberts and Barker posted a time of 3:32.390 at the Alcides Nieto Patino Velodrome. They were 0.9 seconds quicker than their Italian rivals, who they challenged for the gold medal. With a limited field of just five teams at the start of the new Olympic cycle, it is expected the competition will increase as the season progresses and will test the team further.

Jon Mould began the Omnium with 11th in the Flying Lap from a field of 16, and 4th in the Points race. This placed him 8th going into the third event, Elimination, in the evening session. Jon took to the boards for the Elimination, but could only manage to hang on to 15th place finish. Going into day two, he will tackle the Individual Pursuit, Time Trial and the Scratch Race, one of Jon’s stronger events.

After taking a silver in the Team Pursuit in two 3km efforts on track, Amy Roberts returned to compete in the Women’s Scratch race on day one of competition. With a start list of 14 riders posted, the competition was fierce. With fatigue beginning to show, Amy finished the Scratch race in 9th position, where victory was taken by potential Commonwealth rival in Australia’s Isabella King.

Day two at UCI Track World Cup starts at 11.00am (COT) in Cali, and will see Elinor Barker begin her Omnium campaign with the Flying Lap, Points and Elimination Race. Jon Mould will return to the track to complete his Omnium.

End of press release

Gold for GB – 1.01 for Emadi in Kilo

In other news, GB’s Becky James and Jess Varnish took victory in the Team Sprint. The pair qualified fastest in a time of 33.466 at the Alcides Nieto Patiño velodrome before overcoming Japan in the gold medal final. The GB pairing’s best is said to have been good enough for sixth at the Olympics which is great considering Varnish is going from Man 1 to man 2 and it’s so early in the season.

Kian Emadi, who was making his World Cup debut, set a new personal best (1:01.368, second to Columbian Fabian Puerta who recorded a scintillating 1.00.9) in the kilo time-trial for an awesome second place for the British kilo champion.

What isn’t encouraging is how the Welsh team managed to send out a press release to the media while the GB team yet again failed to send anything out.
