A complete change in the weather greeted the riders in Round 8 – an icy cold day with the east wind blowing across the circuit created difficult conditions for anyone at either end of the main groups – trying to break away and trying to hang were both challenging with limited shelter available.

However, in the 4th Cat race which started the afternoon racing, an excellent field of 57 riders took part including Emily Mellor (VO2 Development Team) and Harriet Hollis (Aylesbury) – 47 finished. There were several efforts on the front stretching the main group out from Sean Bradley (Team Trisports), Alex Milne and Sean Bathe-Taylor (Pearson Cycles) before the Prime loomed up after 25km of racing.

This was won in a well-judged effort by Niven from Giles Porter (London Dynamo) and Milne. Two crashes shortly afterwards disrupted the second half of the race but in the finale Porter held his position and line to score an outstanding win from Josh Jones (Cambridge Uni CC) with Riyadh Khamis (Personal Bikefit) taking third place. The random prize is awarded to 12th place finisher Peter Blencowe (Imperial College CC) who will ‘go faster’ courtesy of a WyndyMilla cycle fitting at their Manor Farm Cycle Centre.

The 3rd Cat race also had an excellent field of 45 riders, with five women mixing it with the men, including three under 16’s. There were several riders pulling hard at the front for the first 10km with Alex Tinsley (Twickenham CC) particularly strong and helped by team mate James Blackburn.

The Prime was won by Greg Wiltshire (Kingston Wheelers) from Mark Longstaff (Colchester Rovers) with Neil Wass (TMG Horizon RT) featuring again. Two attacks followed, one by Tinsley which was short-lived and another from Ken Buckley (AW Cycles); then with 2 km to go Callum Oliver (Rapha Condor) made a brave effort to go alone to the finish before a crash disrupted the flow of the race and left riders trailing. The strength and experience of Wiltshire got him to the line first, beating in-form Buckley and Gavin Francis (London Dynamo).

The women riders finished strongly again with the two U-l6 ladies Abigail Dentus (Welwyn Wheelers) in 21st and Anna-Marie Hughes (Prestige Velo Club) in 33rd place; Monica DaPolenza was 25th and Rachel Przybyiski 34th, both from series sponsor WyndyMilla.

Sportingly, winner Greg Wiltshire turned round immediately after the finish to support the First Aider in the aftermath of the crash on the ‘bus stops’ straight. The Maxifuel random prize is awarded to 5th place finisher Jacek Reder who receives a Maxifuel rucksack comprising of Viperactive energy fuel, gels and bottles.

The Elite race attracted 31 entries for their one hour plus 5 laps race and from the start Steven Jackson (HotChillee), lead. After he was reeled in Matthew Butt (Team ASL360) tried on his own before a very determined effort by Simon Oxenham (VC10), now riding with the Elite class moved away.

He was chased down by Vince Halpern (Handsling)and they all came together after another 2 km, before Steve Golla (High Wycombe CC) and Henry Furniss (WyndyMilla) showed at the front. After 40 minutes Connall Yates (InGear Quickvit Trainsharp) took the prime from Phil Holloway (Southend Wheelers).

A very determined break formed with Yates to the fore with Tom Smith (Felt-Colbornes RT), Halpern, Golla, Holloway and a new name to the series RAF rider Robert Willcocks; the speed in which they moved away caused all sorts of panic in the main group which split into several chasing groups. The ride of the day came from Golla who attacked up the main drag to the old finish; he quickly opened a substantial gap on his breakaway companions to cross the line for a brilliant and well deserved win. Tony Gibb (the pack racing) was second, Smith third, the two out and out sprinters with Willcocks beating the three remaining riders.

The wind and cold created a tough day for the organisers, officials and riders with a number of crashes and some riders having difficulty acting on race directions when the 3rds and E123 fields came together; these issues need to be addressed by the next race.
