The stage started and finished in Lagoa, in southern Portugal and the riders had to get over a mountain in the middle of the stage before deciding who was the winner in what many expected to be a bunch sprint.

The stage saw an early break of ten riders escape and as they got closer to the finish, losing riders along the way, the break were holding on well until with five kilometres to go race came together from which the team formerly known as Rabobank (Blanco now) won their second stage in a row thanks to Bos.

Britain’s Mark Cavendish finished 20th whilst Alex Dowsett survived a fall to finish 94th.

“It’s really another collective victory because my teammates did a great job setting up the lead-out train” explained Bos afterwards. “Tom Leezer dropped me off at 300 meters from the finish line. I chose the wheel of Cavendish (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) but he seemed to have problems with his chain. Our team controlled the race in the beginning, which was good for me surviving the two climbs. I am really satisfied with this victory, this is my fifth race in the early season.”
