Steve Nunn holds on, just, to win the Eastern Road Race league event, the Paul Simon Homes Road Race

An 8.30 start for the Paul Simon Homes, Eastern Road Race League event meant there was still a chill in the air but at least it was dry, yet again the main hurdle was the state of the roads riddled with pot-holes.
A full field of over 60 riders took to the road on a rolling circuit around Whitwell in Hertfordshire before there was an early attack from Ben Wright (VC Revolution). He had a maximum gap of two minutes over the field before he was caught by a small break of five riders.
That break was caught with four laps remaining and the peloton stayed together until an attack from Vince Divine (Finchley RT). There was no real organised chase and Divine soon had a 45 second gap. When passing the line with two to go, he had a slender lead of 20 seconds and that was when Steve Nunn (Finchley RT) bridged the gap to leave the two team mates alone and working well together.
On the bell lap, the pair had 40seconds over the chasing pack and this lead was still intact half way round the final lap, but as they crested the hill in the finishing straight the bunch were almost on the pair, Nunn had just enough energy left to get him to the line but Divine was caught close home by James Saue (PCH) and the host club had to settle for first and third.
Nunn said after “I couldn’t believe the bunch gained so much time on us and I was shocked to see them when I looked over my shoulder on the brow of the hill, I am very pleased with my win and the strong showing from our club”.
