Despite horrendous rain in the late afternoon, the sun came out for the Malton Wheelers North Yorkshire RR league at Kirby Misperton

Julie Rodman writes … 49 riders took to the start line in the glorious lanes just outside Malton. Famous for its horse riding schools and rural setting, it was soon livened up by the cyclists.

No one could get more than seven seconds over the bunch in the 50km race and attacks were soon brought back by the peloton. As the bell rang for the final lap, the riders jumped around to gain their positions, unfortunately in the middle of the bunch there was a touch of wheels and seven riders crashed, with two summersaulting into the hedgerow and nettles.

Fortunately nothing broken but pride and some abrasions and grazes. We wish Luke Preston Airedale a swift recovery along with Matthew Wilson of Rock racing, who brought most of his team down with him for company.

The race even though a smaller group still worked hard right up to the line, giving the judges a nightmare of their first bunch finish. The winner being the man in form Andrew Windrum York Cycleworks from Ben Harvey Rutland CC and Maciej Wontorowski Wetherby Whs in third.

Great event ran by Matthew and his cheerful team at Malton Wheelers with the help of other local clubs, they certainly did the sport proud.
