This was also the last race of the day and whilst the quantity was down on the previous three rounds, the quality was most definitely there. It provided a fitting finale for an outstanding days racing on the new and exciting circuit being used on the Elveden Estate of Lord Iveagh for the first time this year.

Glyndwr Thomas (VC Norwich) and Hugo Robinson (Ipswich BC) attacked after just two-laps and stayed away for two laps until they were joined by Malcolm Smith (St Ives CC) and Richard Dunnett (Private Member) who had jumped away from the uninterested bunch.

It looked as though these four, working very well together, would stay away for the remainder of the 12-lap race. However and surprisingly, they were later joined by a group of four riders that included the eventual winner Neale. He was accompanied by Jamie Caldwell (MG-Maxifuel Pro Cycling), Phillip Hetzel Ipswich BC and Lee Desborough St Ives CC.

Although there were eight riders in the breakaway group, they had to be on their guard as the main bunch were less than two-minutes behind and there are parts of the course where it’s possible to see across the open arable fields for the riders to each other.

In the end they weren’t able to haul back in the leading bunch and on the uphill finish Neale out-smarted the breakaway group to take the victory by just one second. Elite rider Caldwell won the sprint for second place ahead of Thomas, Desborough and Robinson respectively, who were all credited with the same time.

In the closing stages three riders, John McClelland (Prestege VC), Rob Muzio (Braintree Velo Cycle Racing Club) and Ross Fawcett (Ipswich BC) had launched an attack from the main bunch to contest the minor placing’s and although they did cut the deficit to the leaders, they were still one minute 46 seconds back. The remaining riders finished a further one minute 16 seconds behind them, just over three minutes behind Neale.

In the previous round Neale had finished second to Joishua Green (Glendene CC) where he just lost out in the bunch sprint on the line, with the first three finishers all given the same time!

After the excitement and euphoria surrounding Laura and Emma Trott’s appearance in round three, the women’s race didn’t quite live up to the same high standards. In the early stages all the riders stayed together, but local girl Tanya Griffiths riding for Ipswich BC, took a leaf out of Laura Trott’s book and made a lone break. While not as spectacular as Trott’s, she still finished over a minute ahead of her nearest rival, Beth Coley (VC Norwich) who won the sprint for the line from Susan Freeburn (WyndyMilla) and Jennifer Lake (Squadra Donne – Shutt VR).

The excitement in the first race of the day, for 4th Category riders, came not at the front of the race but as the back markers crossed the finishing line. John Bradbury (Boxford Bike Club), George Alexander (Newdales Cycles RT) and Chris Errington (Autostrasse Porsche RT) were racing for nothing other than pride for 59th to 61st places and having just sprinted for the line as the first two eased up, Errington misjudged the space and clipped them bringing him down. Other than bruised pride and a broken collar bone, the Autostrasse Porsche rider has lived to tell the tale!

In the Youth’s A & B race, Frank Longstaff (Colchester Rovers CC) won the sprint for the line ahead of George Sewell (Braintree Velo Cycle Racing Club), William Mapus-Smith (West Suffolk Wheelers & Triathlon) and Chris Jackson (Strada Sport), who were all given the same time!

The next and last round of this exciting series of racing takes place on Saturday 28th June 2013.
