Matt Gittings (AW CYCLES) won the feature race at the Rob Jefferies Memorial meet at Bournemouth track, chasing for 6 km to gain a lap. Organiser and close friend of Jefferies, Gordon Skillen said “Rob would have been proud of it, as a sprinter he would have hated the 25km race that bore his name but as a spectator he would have loved itâ€.
The 100 lap race started at a ferocious pace, there was no need to attack in the early stages, the sheer speed forcing selection. Vojtech Blazejovsky (Brixton Cycles) was the first to gain daylight. Taking advantage of a brief lull, Blazejovsky quickly gained half a lap and then worked hard for the other half.
Gittings responded to the move but seemed caught in no-man’s land. But with hands coiled over brake hoods that were not there, the national derny paced champion set about a 6km pursuit that would ultimately win him the race.
Maximillian Stedman (AW CYCLES) & Alex Wise (VC ST Raphael) gained a lap with 30 to go with Charles Rees (Team Tor 2000) marooned in the middle. James Connell (Brixton Cycles) & Graeme Lackford (Team Tor 2000) got free at 22km , Connell taking a couple of £10 primes, Jefferies was a member of the London club before moving to Dorset.
Gittings was dominant throughout and will be back in Bournemouth to defend his Derny title in August. Promoted by Poole Wheelers, a full supporting programme saw a super afternoons racing. Blazejovsky impressed in a full on roadmans pursuit, holding nothing back as others may have done. Charlie Calvert bossed the youths racing but was undone by Rebecca Raybould in the devil after being taken up the banking; One for the girls!
Brendan Drewett has looked good in the mid-week track league and lived on the front before winning the B group devil. Lewis Magnani took the Alan Spencer Memorial Devil wanting it more than Alex Wise. Drewett won the Eddie Beck 10 km B group point’s race.
The fifteen year old always had more speed than Richard Davidson but Davidson showed he is not just a tester. Dark clouds were threatening for the last race but it did not rain on Gittings parade. The prize list ran deep, cash, wine, tea & cake for the winners and Lance Armstrong books for the losers, back to Skillen: “ We tried to put a bit of individual character on the event and I hope we achieved thatâ€!
