Tour de France sprint champion Peter Sagan says he is rested and refreshed ahead of his bid to win the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic tomorrow.
Sagan won Le Tour’s fêted green jersey for the second year in succession just two weeks ago and will line up for the 140-mile road race tomorrow with his sights set on another victory in The Mall as he begins his build-up to the World Championships at the end of September.
“I’m coming here after the Tour de France stress-free to start the third part of my season and I want to make good preparations for the World Championships,†said Sagan, who will lead the Cannondale Pro Cycling team’s bid for victory.
“After the Tour de France I want to do well, but I don’t know what I can expect as it’s been two weeks and I haven’t had a lot of training. But for the sprint I want to be at the front and I want to do well.â€
Sagan is confident that his five Cannondale team mates will put him in a good position to challenge for the win.
“We will see, but I think other teams will also want to control the race for a sprint, so we will see tomorrow,†said the Slovak sprinter.
“I’ve recovered well after the Tour de France, so now I am here with the team and want to do well.
“I’m very happy to be here as I like London and know that cycling is very popular here. It was good to see so many thousands of people on bikes today [in the Prudential RideLondon FreeCycle] and that bicycles are very popular.â€
Gerald Ciolek from the South African team MTN Qhubeka, is also looking forward to racing in Britain. The German sprinter won the snow-hit Milan-San Remo in March this year and will be one of Sagan’s main rivals if the race comes down to a sprint finish.
“For us this is not a small race this is one of our big goals this season,†he said. “We are a Pro-Continental team so from the beginning of the season this has been an aim for us.
“We have seen in the Olympic Road Race that it more or less ended in a sprint, so I think we can expect a sprint on Sunday. That’s what we are here for; I think we have a good chance to do a good result in a sprint.
“When I’ve seen other races in the UK before, I always remember there were a lot of spectators and a lot of people on the road to keep our motivation up when we’re racing.â€
Race Director Mick Bennett said that he was delighted to see Ciolek on the start line after his impressive win in Italy.
“I’m delighted that we’ve got the winner of probably the hardest Milan-San Remo there has ever been in Gerald Ciolek,†said Bennett. “I’m amazed because of the weather that Gerald even had a sprint in him at all.â€
Former British junior road race champion Yanto Barker also commented on Ciolek’s presence in the Prudential RideLondon Classic, adding that his Team UK Youth hoped to live up to racing against some of the best pro men’s teams in the world.
“I think personally, and speaking for the rest of the British Continental teams, and all of the other guys in our team, especially our team, we would like to perform and show we are not just a decent team in a small pond but a team who can hold their own against the likes of Gerald (Ciolek) and the rest of the guys.â€
The Prudential RideLondon Classic starts 12:45 on Sunday 4 August and riders will race over 140 miles through London and Surrey before finishing on The Mall at around 18:00.
