With a quality field lining up at the start, Graham Briggs of Team Raleigh was the winner of the Out of the Saddle Road Race

big thanks to Julie Rodman
The overcast conditions did not deter the excellent promotion from Out of the Saddle RC today and the quality field did the guys proud. Fifty seven riders took to the start line from the idyllic setting of the Garden Rooms Tea Room at Braithwell (alternatively known as the the Out of the Saddle) club room.
Just after the race was neutralised out of the village, the attacks started and by the end of the first lap we had a lead group with a gap of 39 seconds. These included riders from IG Sigma sport, Node 4 Giordana, Wheelbase and Team Raleigh.
After 21 miles, averaging 27mph, we had a group of 16 riders at 1.26′ including Graham Briggs (Raleigh), Jon Dibben (100% ME), Node 4 riders Mike Northey, Roman Van Uden, Nathan Edmundson, Richard Hepworth, IG Sigma sport riders Ryan Mullen, Pete Williams (a previous winner of this race) James Moss, George Harper, and also Wheelbase Altura duo, Tom Barras and Ali Rutherford. James Simpson of Herbalife and Ian Wilkinson of Team Uk Youth.
This group of riders were joined a lap later by five others and with all the places taken and teams represented, the group was to increase its lead from 2.05 to 3.43′.
With four laps to go, the race spilt at the front with various attacks being made, which meant we had a group of 12 powering away and working well together. The pressure was definitely on from Node 4 Giordana and IG Sigma Sport.
As the race came down to two laps to go, we had two chasing riders trying to connect and they got within 43 seconds. However Graham Briggs had different ideas with constant attacks along with Jon Dibben. Graham had unfortunately suffered a puncture on the first lap, but managed a quick wheel change from IG Sigma Sport to keep in the race.
The race was beginning to take its toll and riders were detaching themselves from the break. As the small rises over the motorway and the increasing wind took their toll on the riders, four broke away; Rutherford, Mullen, Northey and Briggs.
This was an interesting run into the finish as we turned left into Long Leys Lane with the riders having a very safe run into the edge of Braithwell. Two riders broke clear and the sprint was won by local rider Graham Briggs (Team Raleigh) from Mike Northey (Node 4 Giordana), closely followed by Ryan of IG Sigma Sport and Ali Rutherford of Wheelbase Altura.
The previous winner Pete Williams led in the rest of the breakaway riders into the finish.
It was a wonderful event from a small club Out of the Saddle who did the South Yorkshire roads and riders proud. The Rocky Road and carrot cake was awaiting the riders from Gina and Stuart in the Garden rooms. It was good to see local riders Ben Swift and Russ Downing cheering the riders on from Braithwell Market place. Same again next year riders? I do hope so.
