While stage three’s 16km individual time trial shook up the overall at the Tour of Britain, Rapha Condor JLT’s young riders took the opportunity to measure themselves in the race of truth against the reigning Olympic Time Trial Champion Bradley Wiggins.

With Richard Handley being the only one of the team’s number to survive the team’s misfortunes yesterday, for the majority of the team the focus was simply to get through the stage with as little difficulty as possible.

Team manager John Herety commented, “Our aim for today was to keep Rich in in mix hope he could consolidate his overall position going into the tough hilly stages later in the week. It was another really cold and horrible day, and most of the guys ended up finishing in a similar time.”

“Rich did a solid ride but I could see that he lost a fair amount of time not wanting to takes too many risks on the corners, up against opposition like this though there is no room for error, really.”

Handley ended the ride as the fastest of the team, clocking 21’58” on the Knowsley Park circuit, and he remains the team’s highest placed rider on G.C. in 33rd place at 2’21”.

“I’d like to see Rich move up the G.C, through the rest of the week. He’s a very talented rider, and he’s put in some fantastic performances this year so we know he can do it. It’s just a matter of him being consistent, and a little bit aggressive too.”

The race continues tomorrow, with a 188km road stage from Stoke to Llanberis. The hilly route should see some early action and offer a chance for Kristian House to get back into contention for the King of the Mountains title.
