Rain & Fog Play Havoc with Mid Devon Hill Climbs

Rain and fog on Haytor sees Mid Devon CC hill climb shortened and won by Ben Davis of Bristol RC

A week ago the Tour of Britain was blessed with fine weather, but competitors for the Mid Devon hill climbs were met with rain and fog on Haytor. The last mile of the climb was deemed to be unsafe with visibilty very bad, so a decision was made to cut the event from 3.1 to 2 miles, thus avoiding a mist shrouded finish.

Despite this a keen contest ensued, and despite the weather 24 riders out of 33 took to the start line. The first four riders were separated by 8 seconds. Winner was up and coming Bristol Road Club rider Ben Davis, beating second placed Charles Coleman of VC Walcot by 6 seconds. Race favourites Tavis Walker of VC Walcot and James Dobbin of Arctic-SRAM RT finished in third and fourth place respectively. Andrew Feather of Exeter Wheelers was the top local rider in 5th place.

James Davey of the promoting club was top junior, finishing in a fine 8th place overall, whilst the vetaran awards were won by Ian Rowe of North Devon Wheelers and Malcolm Chave of Okehampton CC. Ayse Vahiboglu of the Exeter Wheelers survived a nasty fall on a greasy cattle grid to scoop the ladies award.

Unfortunately the planned climb of Widecombe in the afternoon fell foul of the weather, with the second half of the climb still covered in fog at midday.
