A victory in the Superprestige at Ruddervorde but 11th place in Czech World Cup after a bad day makes it a mixed bag for the weekend

Helen Wyman (Kona Factory Racing) writes … The weekend was real mixed bag for me. It’s no secret that I’m hitting the season with a little less form that last year and that is planned and no cause for concern. I really am focused on the latter part of the season.

However that isn’t the reason I got 11th in Tabor (World Cup). I had a bad day, I dealt with it and moved on. Bike riders shouldn’t make excuses. We have a great job, we are lucky, and ride good or bad, it’s important to just smile and carry on.

So with that in mind I smiled (OK I had a 5 minute grump at myself but was quickly talked out of it by my multi-functional husband) and moved onto the next race which was the Superprestige in Ruddervorde.

I’d won this race before. I think it was actually the last time I rode there, so I knew the course pretty well. It’s rocket fuel fast and basically like BMX meets Cyclo-Cross. It’s fun, and even with pretty tired legs and head from racing and travel, it’s not really a course that stresses your body.

I got a steady start, moved into the lead and tried not to look back. I knew from the updates passing the pit each half lap, the gap was steadily growing so could just focus on doing things technically correct with no stress.

I enjoyed it a lot and after Saturday’s performance it was nice to show that despite being early in the season for me in terms of where I want to be at, I’m competitive. There’s a lot more to come from my legs and I’ll keep working hard.

Finishing this first block of racing will be the Koppenberg Cross and the European Championships. Hopefully I can be in the battle at both of these events although others are carrying great form into the events so I suspect getting two arms raised isn’t going to be easy at either race.
