Recap: Stage 1 and Tom Moses wins and takes Yellow

Despite being 50k shorter than stage 1, it was a long hard day for the men in black defending the yellow jersey of Tom Moses. Like the day before, there was an escape and the first two hours saw 44 kilometres pass under their wheels.

The three riders were never let off the leash by Rapha Condor JLT whose effort to control the race can be gauged by the fact three of their riders finished over 14 minutes down at the finish. With 50k to go, the gap was coming down and as the break crossed the line with 30k to go, they were only 1’15 ahead of the peloton.

The junction was soon made and in a big bunch kick, former British Junior RR champion Dan McLay was third with Tom Moses in 26th place and holding on to his six second lead on the overall. Mark Christian held onto his Sprints jersey as well.

The Rapha Condor JLT manager John Herety said afterwards “It went well for us today. We had to be sure that a small move went so we would be able to peg it back over the course of the stage, and get the race to come down to a bunch sprint.”

“The boys did a great job. There was never any need to panic, and they all rode really strongly for Tom. It isn’t a big lead on GC and there is a long way to go in this race yet, but we will be doing everything we can to maintain that lead for as long as we can”.

Today’s stage is another relatively short stage at 141km from Elbeuf sur Seine to Argentan, however there are a number of climbs in the second half of the race that should see some action.
