Team Report Win number 4 for Bottrill as he smashes course record in RTTC National Circuit Series Race

On Sunday afternoon, the UK’s finest time trialists gathered in the small town of Weston in Staffordshire where Stafford CC, the promoting club, put on a splendid promotion for all the riders taking part.

The forecast rain gave way to bright blue skies but the down side would be high gusts of wind. With a technical, undulating circuit, through small villages and down country lanes, it would take true determination and bike handling to negotiate the race st speed. The distance to be covered was just over 22 miles with a course record of 49:00 set by Charles Taylor-South Pennine CC.

The senior riders got underway, with some top names racing including National champions and professionals. First rider to set am awesome and very respectable time was Russell Hampton Team (Athonsport-Bioracer). The former Tour of Britain King of the mountains set an incredible time of 47:42 to get well in side the former course record and prove that the course was very demanding.

Hampton’s glory only lasted a few moments as former National Hill Climb champion, Matthew Clinton (Mike Vaughan Cycles) was riding his first event of the season, riding on his brand new bike. Clinton, hammered hard to shave a further five seconds off Hamptons time to take the lead and course record.

At 1pm, Matthew Bottrill (www.drag2zero.com), took to the start line. With a unbeaten record of three races and three wins in 2014, Bottrill came on a mission to set a high standard and put his full knowledge of time trialing to the test.

The time keeper, counted down to the word “Go” and Bottrill stamped on the pedals hard, and the rider and machine were soon up to speeds of 30 mph. With a few hard climbs in the first few miles, pacing was needed.

Then, with a left turn into the twisting lanes, technique came into play. Over the reservoir, the high gust of winds came and it was at this point that Bottrill, got his first glimpse of his two minute man James Ratcliffe (PMR @ Toachim House).

It took a few further miles for the catch to happen on the final headwind section and most demanding part of the circuit. With the two riders both on Giant Bikes, it was a sight to behold as the riders battled it out.

Now knowing the course record was well within reach, with one last push, Bottrill caught his four minute man Robin Ovenden (Caesean CC). With just one mile to go, Bottrill was on the rivet and knew any moment he was about to blow! But then the sight the every rider prays for came. The sight of the time keeper stopping the clock in 45:55. Smashing the record by 3:05!

Asked about his winning ride, he replied “I’m chuffed with today to be honest. I really did not know what to expect. I’ve not felt great all this week after the back lash of having a cold. But I’ve managed to keep on top of the training load. But soon as I left the start, I knew I was on for a ride. I really hoped to get within 46 mins so I’m very happy with 45:55”

So what next? “I’m having a few weeks away from racing to focus on training, and basically overload!! Then its full gas all the way up to my target of the British Time Trail Championships. These types of course’s are ideal for my preparation, but I have to focus on training for a few weeks”.
