Startlist – Vericool Circuit of the Fens

NOTE: Send your results as well as club, team & event news here

The date for the Vericool Circuit of the Fens, 27th July is fast approaching. The Vericool Circuit of the Fens offers the non-climbers a chance to get their hands in the air with not a single mountain nor even a solitary hill to cause the rouleur even a modicum of grief during possibly the longest UK domestic race in 2014 at some 210km.

Entered for the race are all the usual suspects including last years winner, Marcin Bialoblocki who will wear number 1. Winner of last weekend’s Velo29 Altura Stockton GP Road Race, Russell Downing, is entered along with Adam Blythe and Hugh Wilson who was 7th at Stockton and is suited to these type of courses.

Alex Peters, who was second at Stockton, is entered for Madison Genesis with a group of other possible winners in their line up. This is almost a home race for Metaltek Kuota who were the only team to get two riders in the break at Stockton and those riders, Rhys Lloyd and Adam Martin will be joined by former WorldTour pro Dan Fleeman. Pedal Heaven again send a squad and they were impressive in the way they brought back a very strong break at Stockton.

Rapha Condor JLT of course send a great squad including Chris Opie who won the bunch kick at Stockton and Richard Handley who made the break. Raleigh have entered a strong line up of riders and will be looking to get back on top after a mixed weekend where they won the Friday night crit but lucked out on the Sunday. Finally, no team back up didn’t stop Bioracer kitted out Russell Hampton making his mark at Stockton where he took across Russell Downing to the leaders and then sprinted in third behind Downing and Alex Peters.

The Fens

Pancake flat  but prone to the ever present winds across the Fens calls on the riders’ skills at riding in echelon formation, something that the Dutch and Flemish riders seem born to. Both races will be starting from the centre of Whittlesey, the ‘Elites’ at 12 noon and the ‘Amateur’ support race (for 2/3 categories) soon after.

The route for this year sees a few changes from 2013. The first two laps will still be over reasonably good roads but the extended circuit after Ramsey Forty Foot will incorporate a stretch of single track along Puddock Road that will benefit those at the head of the race.

Similarly the front runners will again reap the benefit along Wype Drove, a broken concrete, narrow farm road leading back into Whittlesey. The drove won’t be quite as intimidating as last year as anxious local councillors arranged for some re-surfacing.

A watchful eye and bike handling skills will also be called into play on the approach to the village of Coates. Whilst not seeking to emulate the ‘CiCLE’ race with numerous off-road sections, the organisers have also included a stretch of non-metalled National Byway to avoid a fast junction onto the A605.

The finale will be played out over a revised four mile finishing circuit, again incorporating some narrow stretches to aid the leaders. The survivors will pass six times through the finish before the seeing the chequered flag. The local communities in both Whittlesey and the nearby village of Benwick enthusiastically supported the races last year and both groups are again very much involved in preparations for the events.

The racing is part of the Whittlesey Cycling Weekend. A range of sportives onganised by “Wheels in Wheels” and supported by the Raleigh Road Show and Shimano will be taking place on the Saturday, followed by Fenland District Council’s ManorFest music festival from 3pm through until 11pm.

On the Sunday, live music will be performed throughout the afternoon in Whittlesey Town Centre, along will other events, whilst Benwick residents are putting on a range of complementary events in their village.

Race HQ for both events will be the Sir Harry Smith Community College, Eastrea Road, Whittlesy, PE7 1XB. See race website for more details: www.circuitoffens.co.uk
