The morning started a little damp from the overnight heavy thunder storm experienced in the area but it soon dried and warmed up giving way to a humid race.
Craig Denning (Dream CC) was the first to show in the hour race as he led them around the first lap and into the woods but he had young Tom Sewell (Cotswold Veldrijden) for close comfort. This duo soon became four when Kench and then Matt Woods (Hargroves Cycles) joined up at the front. On the second lap there wasn’t much between the leaders as they were in close contact with each other.
While the four were beginning to stretch their lead Craig Hay (Rock and Road) began to reel them in but his race was later to descend in disaster towards the end of the race, more to follow. It wasn’t until the fourth lap when Kench started to show his strength and pull away from Denning who in turn began to distance himself from junior rider Sewell while Woods retired.
As the laps ticked down Kench built up a commanding lead over Denning who did close up in the technical sections but soon lost time on the power parts of the course, Hay was holding fourth place on the penultimate lap when he first had a puncture, managed to get to the pit for a bike change but he lost time and two places on the last lap, and then crossed the finish line with a broken rear hanger and a broken spoke on his rear wheel.
The earlier youth race saw Edward Gronbech (Oxford City RC) in his first Cyclo Cross race of the season open up an early lead and throughout t the race was never challenged. Ieuan Woods (Charlotteville) was second with Jamie Kimber (Cotswold Veldrijden) the first girl.
The under 12’s race was a close fought affair with two young riders neck and neck throughout when Jamie Gostick (Palmer Park) piped Lewis Evans (Cotswold Veldrijden) right on the line, while Tyler Smith (Cotswold Veldrijden) was third.
