Summer weather for National Trophy at Shrewsbury as the stars come out to shine

Sunday saw the first round of the 2014/15 National Trophy Cyclo-Cross at Shrewsbury organised by the hard working head of local bike shop Dave Mellor Cycles and the good folk at Mid Shropshire Wheelers.

The club, who hope that the national committee for cyclo-cross in Britain can see how much of a perfect fit the place is for the British Championships in 2016, yet again overcame the obstacles outside of those on the course to put on a cracking event.

Two legends of off road cycle racing Tim Gould and Chris Young after the Vets race

The entry was staggering both in numbers and quality. The first events of the day for veterans (over 40 & 50) had Legends from the eighties and the talk was all about Tim Gould, Chris Young and Steve Douce all racing on the same track at the same time again.

Back in the ‘80s and 90’s, the three of them were the ‘hitters’ of their time, all three being on the podium for the Cyclo-Cross championships in 1988. Now, they were racing in the over’s 50 category. Those us who have been watching the sport for many a year will know that Chris Young has been a permanent fixture in the cycling scene but to have Gould and Douce back put some magic back into the atmosphere of the racing.

The racing for these stars of yesteryear was early at Shrewsbury when the temperatures were in single figures and the mist was as wet as a fish in water. And, so thick that visibility was near to zero in the woods but the riders managed to emerge from it unscathed.

First away was the under 40’s where Ian Taylor and Darren Taylor resumed their battle from last year with Taylor winning by 34 seconds from last year’s National Trophy Vet 40 champion, Darren Atkins. The course at this stage was damp and slippery and talking to Over 50s British Champion Phil Roach afterwards he explained how some quite ‘knobbly’ tyres just got clogged up whilst others retained their grip.

2014_ShrewsburyNationalTrophy_02

Ian Taylor emerges from the fog to win the Vets 40

Tyre pressures were very important too and Roach, on a new bike (RX5) for the season courtesy of Raleigh, rode away from his rivals, including the aforementioned legends, to win by 24 seconds from a rejuvenated Chris Young. Third was former Vets champion Ian Wright whilst Tim Gould (6th) and Steve Douce (8th) were both showing glimpses of past brilliance in today’s world and getting lots of cheers from the crowd who could still recognise them!

The Veteran’s racing made way for the Youth racing. It used to be that this would all take place at the same time but with so many riders entering cyclo-cross now, the Under 14’s event for Boys and Girls preceded the races for the Under 16 Boys and Girls. The mist was starting to lift, the temperatures rise and the organiser Dave Mellor was still racing around on two feet keeping on top of broken tapes or fallen poles making out the course.

The racing saw something pretty unique as well as British Under 16 Champion Dan Tulett, proudly wearing the ‘champion stripes’ on his sponsors skinsuit, won his event as did his younger brother Tulett Ben. In the Girls racing, a rider who has been racing for many years already, Poppy Wildman won her event for Under 14s whilst another experienced campaigner Lucy Horrocks won the Under 16 girls with full factory support behind her.

After their podium presentations, the racing was soon back on track in full sunshine now as coats were removed and replaced by t-shirts for the most unlikely of weather for a winter sport! Three races were on the course at the same time, Juniors, Women and Veteran Women. The Juniors were through first led by Alfie Moses from Yorkshire with Joshua Waters pushing him hard.

Alfie Moses wins the Junior race

Up there in the mix too was Ewan Grivell-Mellor from the promoting club and son of organiser Dave Mellor giving him an extra ‘job’ to do shouting encouragement.

Whilst Moses went on to win and Ewan finished an excellent 6th to cap a good day for the organiser, there was a great battle in the Women’s race going on. In the closest race of the day, any one of four riders could have won the race as there was nothing between them from start to finish.

A careful and measured effort leading to the finishing straight followed by a searing sprint that in the past has seen her win the Women’s Tour Series, Annie Simpson held off the juniors Ffion James and Amira Mellor.

And carrying on the ‘legend’ theme, a rider winning National titles in the early noughties, Isla Rowntree was back with a bang in 5th. The Vets winner was the British Women’s Vets champ Tracey Fletcher.

That just left the big one, the elite Men, and we’ve talked about legends and this race had legends in the making too. British Champion Ian Field has won the British title the last three years and competes more in mainland Europe than Britain these days. Also on the start was Liam Killeen, a rider with Commonwealth Games titles to his name in mountain biking as well Olympic top 10s and four Silver medals in the British Cyclo-Cross championship. It was a quality field that also included a rider who won the National Trophy in 2013 but was still recovering from a crash, Paul Oldham.

On a course that was now drier and less slippery, the big group of starters was led past the steps after the dash from the start by under 23 rider Ben Sumner with Ian Field just behind on his wheel.

2014_ShrewsburyNationalTrophy_16

Good solo win for British Champion Ian Field on a new bike from new sponsor Ridley who have joined up with his long time sponsor  Hargroves Cycles

Sumner led the field for a good whilst the selection in the mix at the front got ever smaller. Then, Ian Field in the British Champion stripes changed gear and rode away alone. No-one could stay with him and whilst there were battles behind, the winner was never in doubt barring accident or mechanical.

Whilst the win was not in doubt, who would fill the minor places was never done and dusted as some riders like Ben Sumner started to slip back a few places and others like Liam Killeen and Tom Van Den Bosch moved forward to stake their place for that podium.

It wasn’t just raw power which dictated a riders place in the race but there were always places on the course where a rider would be looking for the limit of adhesion. Some, invariably in the heat of a battle, over stepped it, slipping to the ground and losing valuable time on rivals in the process.

This all helped set up a finale where Liam Killeen and Jody Crawforth were elbow to elbow all the way to the line to decide who was going to be second and third whilst the rest of the top ten all finished within thirty seconds of each other.

It was a super race and the winner was delighted with the performance saying afterwards “winning by such a margin has given me a big confidence boost going into the opening round of the World Cup Series which starts next weekend in Valkenburg, Netherlands”.

2014_ShrewsburyNationalTrophy_15

Liam Killeen (above) from Malvern in Worcestershire meanwhile explained the last National trophy he did before Sunday was also at Shrewsbury in 2012. “It is a nice one to do here, not too far away and it was a good challenging race today. I wasn’t gridded on the front row so I didn’t have the best of first laps but I have done a few ‘cross races in the last few weeks so I got stuck in and kept it smooth.”

It was then time to present the jerseys to the series leaders and for the post race socialising to begin before journeys to all parts of the UK began. Round 1 was done and dusted and Round 2 is down in Southampton, home race for the very strong Hargroves Cycles –Ridley racing team and it is expected that yet again there will be some great racing in a sport on the rise.
