There were two more Gold medals for GB on the final day of the UEC Elite Track European Championships in Guadeloupe as Laura Trott & Katie Archibald both triumphed
Photo of Laura Trott winning the final sprint when the title was on the line. Pressure and she battled through winning three out of three events on the final day
Sitting in third place overnight, Trott and Jolien d’Hoore both battled hard for the European Champion’s jersey in the Women’s Omnium and at the end after six events, the margin of victory for Trott was just one point after beating the Belgian in the final sprint of the crucial Points race.
Nail-biting or what! The day has started well for Trott winning the 500 metre time trial that put her in second place overall. Her winning streak continued with victory in the Flying lap as well and they went into the final event tied on points.
The Points system for the Omnium has changed and so the Points race, and every sprint in it, was really going to be crucial to both girls and those just behind in with a chance of winning.
Trott scored in four sprints as did D’Hoore and what a battle it was. Trott beat D’Hoore in sprint two and then D’Hoore beat Trott in sprint 5 and 6. Trott though left the magic until the end with a win in that final sprint scoring two more points than D’Hoore and taking the title.
GB’s Katie Archibald won the Gold in the Individual Pursuit while World champion Joanna Rowsell was fifth.
In other events, Katy Marchant was 8th in the Women’s Keirin while Rosie Blount was eliminated in the first round repechage. Scotland’s Callum Skinner finished 12th in the Men’s Keirin while Matt Crampton was eliminated in his repechages. In the tough Madison race, Mark Christian and Owain Doull were seventh.
