Round Seven of the ultra-popular West Midlands Cyclo-cross league ventured across the border into the East Midlands as the latest event was staged at Misterton Hall near Lutterworth. The event was promoted by Welland Valley Cycling Club.

The day’s action proved a massive hit with 450 competitors in various categories. With Cyclo-cross a great sport where the youngest and oldest, experienced and newbies can race on a course that on this occasion attracted an Olympian, Commonwealth Games winner, participants, former World and National champions. The autumn colours of the splendid surroundings of Misterton Hall were an excellent setting to provide a technically challenging course with fast shale pathways, tarmac roadways, dry woodlands and strength sapping meadowland.

Under 8’s
The youngest competitors kicked off a full days racing. With some children on wheels the size of a dinner plate the course was going to be massive challenge. All the children rode with great determination.

Under 10
With a number of clubs with strong Youth Development schemes within the region the Under 10’s race was hotly contested with great ‘skillage’ on display. On a specially designed circuit the racing through-out was incredibly close.

Under 12’s
The Under 12’s race was a very exciting as the lead changed on numerous occasions.
Milton Keynes rider Joel Corbishley stormed through the pack to win. The top five riders separated by 7 seconds.

The girls race was another titanic battle with Millie Geldard snatching victory.

Juniors, Vets 50 and Ladies
There was excellent fast tight racing in all of the categories in this event. At one end of the age bracket, Anthony Neave produced a very impressive performance to win the Junior race whilst at the other, Pete Harris and Harvey Levann dominated the Vet 50 plus race.

Pete Bushby crashed in the later stages as former National Cross Champion Steve Douce demonstrated his class. As the leading duo entered the finishing area, it was Harris who led the sprint out to win by half a bike length from Levann. Bushby took the final step on the podium ahead of Douce. Welland Valley CC club president Vic Barnett was first Over 60.

Jules Toone took an excellent victory from Beth Crumpton. Jules maintained excellent consistent laps as Crumpton was enjoying a more relaxed race after an excellent MTB season capped with participation in the Commonwealth Games MTB.

The Youth event was dominated by Malvern brother and sister youngster Ross & Harriet Harnden as they dominated their events.
In the Under 14 Boys race it was another Leicester Road Clubs Alex Haines carved through the field to victory. Sophie White won the U14 Girls race.

Seniors / U23 & Vets 40

The final event of the day was an epic with 155 riders contesting the Senior, U23 and Vets 40 race. A late arrival and not feeling 100%, Liam Killeen took to the start line with no warm up or course inspection. After an explosive start, it was George Moore who led the way with small groups of 4 or 5 riders forming behind.

As the course flowed around the Misterton Hall estate, Killeen was starting to close the gap on Moore as the duo eased away from Hope rider Dan Booth. Killeen’s classed started to pay off as he gradually eased away from Moore as Booth consolidated his 3rd place. Veteran Kris Bravin rode a faultless race to catch and pass all of his competitors to win the Veterans event ahead of Phil Blacker and Andy Collis.

Welland Valley CC had strong representative in every category.
