Result – East Midlands RR League round 3
The East Midlands Road Race League round 3 was promoted by Welland Valley CC on the excellent rolling Naseby circuit.
A high quality field of 80 riders contested the 62 mile race in bright breezy conditions. With 5 ascents of Oxendon Hill and Naseby Hill it was going to be a tough battle to the finish which was opposite the Battle of Naseby Obelisk. From the start there was a string of attacks before a group of 5 riders broke the shackles of the bunch with 3 laps to go.
George Fox (Rhino Racing), Joe Atkins (Ride Coventry), Oliver Davies (OVB) Patrick Graff and Peter Kirwan (Cambridge CC) put aside their individual differences as they gelled and worked well to gain a 46 second lead over the bunch with 10 miles remaining.
As the break hit the final climb of Naseby Hill in the final kilometre the attacks started to happen. Just as one attack was nullified George Fox (Rhino Racing) took his chance with 500m to go, the explosive effort was so strong his fellow break away colleagues were left behind. It was not until the final 20 meters could George relax and saviour a fine victory.
Patrick Craff was clear in second and Joe Atkins snatched the final place on the podium. Rob Orr (Sportgrub – Kuota Cyclng Team) led home a group of six riders with promoting clubs James Moore and Michael Burke at the head of the bunch sprint.
Many thanks to members and friends for their excellent support ensuring todays event was a big success – Cheers James/Dean
