Feature – Lee Cairns Q & A

Team Swift – Panasonic/Arthur Read jewellers

Footnote: On Sunday, a car knocked Lee off his bike. He admits he is fine with just cuts and grazes and a bruised right lung adding it could have been a lot worse. Thankfully, the driver stopped and admitted full liability so Lee can claim full compensation. We wish him a speedy recovery.

1. What will be your first time trial for 2016 and why that one to kick off the season?
Lee: One of my first TT’s of the season will be the YCF 10 on the 28th February. I was not going to ride it until Nigel Haigh asked me lol. It is fairly fast on a good day.

2. What time trials will be your targets for 2016 and why?
Lee: My TT targets for this year are a 19 minute 10 which I have never done and to lower my 25 and 50 mile times.

3. What phase of the training schedule are you – base miles or intervals?
Lee: Training wise I do a combination of base and intervals. The intervals are key for me though and on my Sunday ride I get a good workout for a couple of hours on the way out with the likes of John Tanner and Wayne Randle and ride easy back home.

4. Do you train on a road bike or TT bike?
Lee: I train on both my TT bike and my road bike. It keeps you used to both riding positions.

5. What is your favourite distance and why?
Lee: My favourite distance is 10 miles. Its tough going full chat but its a great workout and over very quick.

6. What is your favourite course in the country and why?
Lee: My favourite course for TT is the V718 for a fast 10

7. You’re doing a ’10’ – do you take a bidon on the bike and if so, what’s your drink of choice when racing?
Lee: For a 10 I always drink a full bottle of water before I start and take one sis gel 10 minutes before start and yes iI do leave a bottle on the bike but only with sis or OTE mix in it and only 200ml or so for straight after.

8. What is your weapon (bike) of choice for 2016?
Lee: My TT bike is a Scott Plasma premium with Mavic carbon 80mm wheels and Ultegra/Dura Ace groupset mix and my road bike is a Scott Foil carbon with DI2 Ultegra groupset and carbon 50mm wheels

9. What is the key to going fast for you?
Lee: The key to going fast for me is doing vo2 intervals and sprint intervals

10. Finally, if you could change one thing about the way time trials are organised, what it would be (ie, closed roads, etc)
Lee: The changes I would make to TTs are to close the roads to traffic.
