News – Dan McLay 12th in Le Samyn

by Jean Vantalon

At 24, Britain’s Dan McLay (Fortunéo Vital-Concept) seems to have found his legs in the Belgian classics. Yesterday in the GP Le Samyn, the ‘puncher-sprinter’ was part of the winning breakaway in hellish weather.

Whilst Terpstra and Thwaites had escaped, McLay was in the chasing group, finishing 12th in the final of this great event and especially a result that gives Dan more confidence for the next classics to come.

Afterwards Dan said “I’m exhausted and frozen. I could not even eat I was so cold. I thought I was in with a good shot but when Niki Terpstra attacked, he was the strongest. He and Thwaites were gone, they had the best legs. We just had to suffer behind.”

Asked what are your upcoming races and objectives, he says “I’ll try to have a good Paris-Nice. Essayer to do something within sprints and mostly help the team, be there for leaders.”

And the classics, which ones do you dream of? “Paris-Roubaix, Flanders and Milan San Remo. I dream of winning them one day.”

Finally, with his team getting an invite to the Tour de France, is he eager to be on the team for that iconic event? “I hope it is possible. Last year my form came too late for my selection but I think I can be there at the right time with my training program this year. We’ll see, I hope.”
