Adria Moreno of Raleigh GAC Â on his way to second place in the time trial and extending his lead on the GC
IT’S ALL SET for a spectacular test of climbing talent near Okehampton on Sunday as Catalunya’s Adria Moreno Sala (Raleigh GAC) defends a 13-second overall lead after two of three stages of the 44th Totnes-Vire Two-Day Cycle Race, organised by the Mid-Devon CC.
Within striking distance is Tavistock’s former Team Sky star Jonathan Tiernan-Locke (Saint Piran) in fifth place, half-a-minute down.
Saturday’s 108 kilometre road race and a 5 kilometre Individual Time Trial, based at Halwill Junction Devon), were full of action in which leading UK pro teams Raleigh GAC, Madison Genesis and Pedal Heaven vied for the lead.
Dexter Gardias of Pedal Heaven beats Matt Holmes of Madison Genesis to the line on stage 1 but it was time bonuses that determined where the yellow jersey would go.
Tiernan-Locke, from Tavistock, was in his best form since returning from a two-year ‘biological passport’ ban. The opening stage may not have been as hilly as the that lie ahead on Sunday, but it was certainly quick from the off, as the pros set about stamping their authority on the race.
Adria Moreno talks about stage 1
A crash which brought down half-a-dozen riders on the first of six 18 kilometre laps also helped the split the field, with only the stronger riders able to recover.
Adria Moreno set himself up for a good day by winning the first of the intermediate ‘prime’ sprints, taking the five bonus seconds which went with it. The Catalunyan was never out of the leading group, which also contained Tiernan-Locke.
‘JTL’ bided his time as each ‘prime’ sparked more action from riders trying to pick up precious seconds until there were only eight riders left to contest the finish.
Dexter Gardias (Pedal Heaven RT), who had finished third in the ‘Premier Calendar’ Chorley Grand Prix in Lancashire last weekend, won the sprint and the stage from Matt Holmes (Madison Genesis) and Dante Carpenter (Richardsons-Trek RT), with Adria Moreno sixth and Tiernan-Locke seventh. JTL explained afterwards he was feeling ready to win the stage but his legs cramped up and that was the end, for the moment, of his attack on the GC.
The chasing bunch came in a minute 20 seconds down led in by new signing for Raleigh GAC, and Bronze medalist at the World Track Championships in London 2016, Albert Torres.
When those ‘prime’ bonuses were taken into account, Adria Moreno led overall by just two seconds from Pedal Heaven duo Alex Paton and Dexter Gardias. Tiernan-Locke was eleven seconds down.
TIME TRIAL
In only his second race in the UK, Albert Torres of Raleigh GAC won the time trialÂ
Stage Two, the 5 kilometre afternoon Individual Time Trial, was won by Raleigh GAC’s Albert Torres in seven minutes eleven seconds. Albert had earlier explained in a video interview how hsi first race for a while, and the travel, made the first stage too hard but that he will get better the more he races.
And so he did! But Albert was already well down on GC despite a strong chase by Team Raleigh GAC to narrow the gap between the chasers and the break with Adria Moreno who extended his GC lead lead by crossing the line in second place in 7.16.
Third fastest was Madison Genesis’ Matt Holmes (above), but his 7.18 turned into 7.48 because he was  late for his start-slot. Tiernan-Locke’s 7.36 saw him hold sixth place.
Sunday’s showdown starts (10.45am) and finishes between Okehampton town centre and the A30 Services and takes in four laps of a gruelling circuit to Sticklepath, Whiddon Down, North Tawton and back to Okehampton.
