(thanks to Dot Tilbury)

There was a large turnout of 305 competitors at the NSC last Tuesday night for the opening round of Team RL360 Isle of Man’s 2016 Youth League, staged in heavily overcast but dry conditions.

The novices’ one lap race got the proceedings underway, with Jasper Whalley edging out leading girl Reha Maher for the win. Isabella Edwards led Charley Skillen, Isabella Coulson, Jack Monaghan and Harry Tummon home for third, while Henry Kinrade came from behind to snatch eighth from Daniel Coates. The fast finishing Patrick Jones completed the top ten.

In the born 2011 & later class Finbar McSevney, Carter Kneale and Bobby Kerruish escaped from the pack to claim the top three places on the podium. Charlie Dormer ousted Jay Jay Plowman for fourth and Joshua Moffitt won the bunch gallop for sixth. Bernat Munoz-Fite, Bobby Kewley, Joel Prentice and first girl Tara Nelson rounded off the top ten leader board.

Brad Le Geyt got the better of Harrison Skillan, Daniel Minay and Dylan Bullock in the battle for the top slot in the born 2010 event. Kylan Murphy was a solid fifth and top girl Lula Kinnish overtook Conor Madsen-Mygdal on the last lap to claim sixth. Archie Mulholland grabbed eighth ahead of chasers Liam Blake and Taylor Moore, with Elizabeth Christian beating Illiam Thomas to the line for 11th.

Castletown’s Eddie Dillon pipped breakaway partner Tom Pickavance in the dash for maximum points in the born 2009 category. Cameron Hounsell managed to hold off Jake Jones in the tussle for third and best girl May-Saa Smith was too quick for Harry Beattie and Abi Clayton in the fight for fifth. Sean Crone, Henry Dormer and Florrie Thomas trailed in separately to secure eighth, ninth and tenth respectively, while Jonah Kenny and Hugo Howland-Smith kept the main bunch at bay to wrap up the top twelve.

In the born 2008 age group Alec Sorby, T.J.Teare and Freddie Griffin rode clear of a leading group of eight riders to bag the top three positions. Fearne Bregazzi seized fourth ahead of fellow chasers Charlie Williams, George Kinnish, Deaglan Blake and Ryan Nelson, with Ella Darnill outrunning Bob Radcliffe for ninth. Jonty Shimmin and Ryan Batty broke free from the main group to secure 11th and 12th a short distance in front of their lone pursuer Lewis Quirk who was lonely 13th. Tiana Kelly beat Leon Murphy, Rhianna Kinley and Harvey Barrow in the gallop for 14th.

Cian Howard and Orry Lund went from the gun in the born 2007 race and stayed clear to the finish where Howard got the verdict in the final sprint. Rio Kelly circulated on his own for fourth and Jordan Carter had the edge on Florence Griffin and Charlie Scarffe in the battle for fourth.

Leaving the rest of the field in their wheel tracks, Owen Collins, Ivan Sorby and Nicola Quaye slipped away at the start of the born 2006 class and were never caught, finishing in that order. Samual Devereau was a safe fourth and Tom Caine kept Rebecca Cooil at bay for fifth. Tom Darnill clipped off the front of the chasers to pick up seventh, with Sophie Smith heading the scrap for sixth.

Nathan Slack outsprinted fellow escapee Dylan Sewell to win the 2005 & earlier grouping. Tyler Annis outgunned Frank Kinnish, Aaron Corfield and James Scott in the rush for third, with seventh placed Ella Griffin easing out Chloe Dillon for the girl’s prize.

Six riders were in with a chance of winning the combined under 8 & under 10 racing bikes. In the final stages Cian Jackson surged ahead to take the victory from Owen Collins, Ivan Sorby, Drystan Sewell, Orry Lund and Cian Howard. T.J.Teare was too strong for Alec Sorby and Charlie Scarffe in the push for seventh, with Rio Kelly spearheading the rest of the field across the line for tenth. Rebecca Cooil was the first girl in 12th place.

Zac Walker produced one of the rides of the night in the U/12 racing bikes, attacking from the gun and soloing to an emphatic victory. Ralf Holden went off in pursuit but was unable to make any inroads into Walker’s lead, crossing the line nearly half in arrears. Cameron Dudley came through in the sprint to grab third ahead of Tyler Annis, Niall Colquitt, James Devereau and Frank Kinnish, while Kiera Prentice beat Mairi Harrison, Callum Salisbury and Jack Sowerby to the line for eighth.

The U/14 & U/16 racing bikes event was run at an average speed of more than 27 m.p.h. The hot pace gradually thinned out the eleven strong leading group, leaving a select band of nine riders to fight over the honours. On the final lap U/14 rider Will Corkill made a valiant but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to get away. In the end it was Thomas Bostock who took the victory from Will Draper and Ben Christian, with Corkill the best U/14 in eighth spot. Amelia Sharpe, Ellen Barker and Shellan Leeming were the top three girls in 11th, 21st and 22nd places respectively.
