News: Win for Mein at Koppenberg

North East rider Thomas Mein of Derwent CC, has won the Junior race at the classic Koppenberg cyclo-cross event in Belgium. The win came on the back of some impressive results recently where Thomas has been selected to ride for Team GB at the Valkenberg World Cup and the European Championships.

The British rider, one of only two Brits to finish (Matthew Ellis was 17th) held off the challenge from the home nation riders with the minor placings going to Timo Kielich and Arno Debeir (both Belgians).

It was Andrew Goeman (Belgium) who got the best start in Oudenaarde, but it was tight between all the leaders until after the first lap, there was a selection forming out from with Timo Kielich (Bel) who won bronze at the European Championships, Yentl Bekaert, Arno Debeir, Andreas and Britain’s Thomas Mein.

The last time up the cobbles, Mein put the hammer down on the pedals and pulled clear, opening a gap on his Belgian rivals and won his biggest event to date. “It feels great to win in this legendary place” he said afterwards. “It is a course that suits me perfectly.”

His rival Kielich explained “I was still not fully recovered from the EC (Euros) and could not follow him when he rode away at the end.”

In the other categories, Ian Field (Hargroves Cycles Ridley) was disappointed with 18th in the Elite Men’s race saying on twitter “Tough old day out today. The roughest track I have ever ridden. 18th for me by the end. Not quite what I hoped for but that’s life”. In the Women’s, there was no Nikki Brammeier or Helen Wyman with both having had heavy falls at the Europeans and being injured leaving Beth Crumpton on her Estrella bike in 21st.
