2016_crumpton_abergavenny06

We were treated to a great battle in Abergavenny between Beth Crumpton and Evie Richards. After series leader Hannah Payton beat Richards in last weekend, the trophy race looks like being an even better race to the line.

THE third round of the National Trophy Cyclo-Cross takes place on Sunday in the North East at the Hetton Lyons Park promoted by Hetton Hawks CC.

The event will see yet again, a World Champion with Evie Richards back to go for her second win in the series after the victory over Beth Crumpton on her Estrella CX bike in Abergavenny. In the men’s, with the series one all between Ian Field (Hargroves Cycles Ridley) and Yorben Van Tichelt, round 3 will see one of them lead the series proper with them being equal on points at the moment.

All the categories see the usual suspects from the series competing and its a full day of racing from the veterans in the morning to the men in the afternoon as darkness falls. Organiser Steve Hesler very kindly replied to an email to say “The course will be open from 2.30pm until 4pm on Saturday after the Comms inspection which with it being a new course, will be of interest to many riders.

field_yorben_aber

Ian Field (Hargroves Cycles Ridley) and Yorben Van Tichelt ‘man o man’ at Abergavenny. Add British champion Liam Killeen champion to the mix after his charge from the back to the front in Abergavenny and that race will be gripping as well.

That said, with no overnight parking allowed in the park, riders may opt for the next official practice which is between 9 and 10 and be warned, I know of at least one rider who was threatened with DQ if he raced after he was on the course before the allotted time for practice. And he was not the only one on the course before 9 as I was walking it at the time!

A full course description and map is below but the organiser says “The course is a tough one with a lot of elevation. We have a short section of single track through the woods, a steep little on foot run up, hurdles from lap two onwards, two off camber sections but also plenty of areas for overtaking. There is a bridge which is short and steep which will give a cross over point near the finish line. The course is 2.8Km in length.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The start loop takes you round the tarmac cycle track, then off road to the The Run Up. After a right / left switch there is a climb to the top of the park before descending back to the main area. A small click back up to overlook the park before The Esses drop you back down along the tree line where you’ll have your first opportunity to pit.

After a brief return to the tarmac you’re off road down the park to a 180 hair pin over Devil’s Dip sending you back up into the switch back sections. Through there and into a short single track wooded section to test your technical skills after which you will climb back out to The Flyover.

The course then heads north onto The Cambers and returning you back to head under The Flyover and heading up the tarmac from start straight. The course will now turn sharply right over Hawk Hurdles and up to the second pit entry before a huge second effort for The Run Up.
