Doltcini Classic Road Race, Tolleshunt D’Arcy, near Maldon, Essex Sunday 26th February
by Fergus Muir
The Spirit Tifosi Racing Team dominated this 77 mile race to the extent that they provided not only winner Oliver Barbieri but also filled the next four places, as well as seventh and ninth to boot. Top member of a rival team was sixth placed Jacob Tipper (Brother/NRG) while the top ten was completed by Oliver Bates (Wellingborough Cycles, 8th) and Kent Rider Joseph Sutton (10th), the latter just about to join his Goma Dakwerken team in Belgium.
With five Elite and First Cat entries, Spirit Tifosi were the strongest team on paper and they successfully carried out their plan to attach two riders to every break by rival teams. Strada Sport’s smaller team of Second and Third Cats tried to respond, but were worn down by the finish, with an exhausted Tommy Power their top finisher in 13th spot.
Catford/Banks had four strong riders one of their two Elite men Josh Lawless was involved in a second lap crash and faced a long chase to rejoin. The new seven mile circuit consisted of rolling, swirling, mostly neatly hedged roads in an elongated triangle across which a strong south-west wind was blowing. Consequently the field was nearly always in a crosswind with just a short tailwind section from Tolleshunt D’Arcy to Salcott X-Rds.
A fast first lap saw several competitors dropped while the crash on the second lap delayed others. Tom Fitzpatrick (Spirit Tifosi) and James Jobber (Catford/Banks) made an early attack. Then Joe Evans (Madision Genesis), Tommy Power (Strada Sport) and Spirit’s Marcus Burnett made a foray off the front which split the field.
Entering Tolleshunt D’Arcy after 80 minutes racing there was a large lead group with Brother NRG riders at the front, with a second group about half a minute back, with the remains of the bunch 1:45 behind the leaders. Two and a quarter hours after the start Barbieri (Spirit) lea the race up Barn Hall Hill with Evans (Madison/Genesis) and one rider each from Brother/NRG and Goma Dakwerken for company. The bunch was by now out of contention, over three minutes down.
At the finish line with one lap to go Barbieri and Jack Waller led across the line, teammates Passfield and Burnett were each bridging alone and the chase group now led by Evans were at 1:15. At the finish Barbieri led Waller, Burnett and Passfield. Fitzpatrick completed the Spirit quintet, 31 seconds down, while Jacob Tipper (Brother/NRG) led the chasers in at 0:58 seconds.
Dom Schils from the Velo Schils team who had provided most of the excellent organisation, took 17th spot while Morris Bacon (Strada Sport) headed the bunch, 5:30 behind the winner.
